About this deal

Councillor Holmes had always lived in Newhall and when asked where he would rather live if he didn't live in Newhall, his answer was simply – "Newhall". I think it was a massively important day in the town's history and we should proudly promote our past. Speaking at the meeting in 1959, Mr Twigg said: “I have been surprised to see that they have no real case for closing the line for it is obvious that they have not tried very hard in the past to keep it open”. At a meeting in November 1959, George Dow, the British Transport Commission representative and division traffic manager at Birmingham said that British Railways were “under Government instruction” to pay their way and “sentiment cannot enter into it”.

School plays, sports teams, cheque presentations and even maths club - our photographers have captured it all over the years. Santa often pits in an appearance that makes the day even more special for children at such events. It is also a chance to socialise and meet new people or catch up with old friends you have perhaps not had time to meet up with as much as you would like over the year. However, this year marks the 700th anniversary of the first Battle of Burton Bridge which took place between March 7 and 10, 1322. The battle was between the two most powerful men in England – King Edward II and his cousin Thomas, Earl of Lancaster. The latter resided at Tutbury Castle in East Staffordshire. Or it may have come from the old English "cricc" or "cryce", meaning a crutch or staff, or the French word "criquet", meaning a wooden post. Who remembers shopping here - many with mums and grandmas - buying bobbins and buttons. And who could ever forget THAT lift. Scary or what? And not forgetting the big high street name who almost came to Burton in Debenhams. Following the closure of the Beatties store in The Octagon shopping centre, the national department store was at one time seriously considering moving to Burton as part of an extension to Coopers Square shopping centre but sadly the idea never materialised. Her husband was a teacher at William Allitt School and shared the same opinions. He said: "The whole character of the place has changed. It's become de-personalised. An important firm in Burton industrial history is the Pirelli tyre factory. The Italian manufacturer opened its factory in Derby Road the town in 1928 and many have worked there.

There is even a photo of some very retro-looking computers and machinery for those who can remember them - as well as some interesting hairstyles and jumpers which were the fashion of the time. Over the years it expanded and was remodelled until on Tuesday, October 26, 1982, the Burton Mail newspaper carried the bombshell headline: 'Ordishs to close after 168 years'. These fresh-faced pupils are hard at work in our pictures - whether that be representing the school in sports, on the stage and in the classroom. Mr Dow was questioned by a Mr Bailey, of Repton Rural District Council, who suggested using a single-diesel rail carriage to help reduce running costs. This idea was rejected. He said the king had been heading north to crush Lancaster’s army but had to cross the River Trent. Burton Bridge was the only viable crossing and so was politically and strategically important. At that time 30 staff were employed at the store by House of Fraser in the town. The other 35 were employed by concession and brand partners, such as Calvin Klein, and worked in Beatties among the many top high street names selling their wares in the store. While closure plans were rumoured as early as the mid- 1930s, the line did not see its final journey until June 11, 1960.

Thorntons, which had a branch in Coopers Square shopping centre revealed in March 2021 of its plans to shut all of its 61 stores with 603 jobs impacted. The chocolatier said the on-going impact of the covid pandemic and the changing shopping habits of its customers are the reason behind the decision. It's chocolate is still available at other retailers and online, of course. Subsidence problems in 1952 and 1955 had also resulted in the school being demolished with the new William Allitt School opening in 1959. Not content with having the record for the biggest Christmas pudding, Burtonians decided they had to push the boat out again to bag themselves another festive record. Mrs Williams, of Sunnyside, said: "I was born here and I remember when you could go down the street and be greeted by everyone you saw.

House of Fraser said at the time it had taken the decision to close following the failure of discussions over the renewal of its lease at the shopping centre. Poundland later took over the ground floor premises. The upper floor still remains empty. RE Cords: If you fancied spinning some tunes one of the go-to places was R.E. Cords, in High Street. Many a happy hour - or three - would be spent trawling through the endless vinyl recirds and then it would be across the road for a frothy coffee at The Chef. The store is pictured here in 1975.] The Tutbury Hoard, as it became known, remained the biggest hoard of silver coins ever to be found in Britain. It kept this title for well over 150 years – the record was only beaten as recently as 2019. BHS made up the original row of shops in Underhill Walk, Burton. This family favourite has now been turned into a Next store Not only did the group achieve an incredible feat, they also raised money for Queen's Hospital in Burton and Dr Barnardo's.
