About this deal

Burying Your Brother in the Pavement is an intriguing title for a play – and it comes from the pen of a playwright described as a ‘powerful voice for Britain’s youth’ ( Independent ). The lyrics are given to us but the music isn’t. So I have cast some brilliantly talented people from our youth company who can not only act but can play instruments and they have taken on board the whole musicality of it. So we have actor-musicians on stage. We’ve got guitars, flutes, saxophone – and they have gone away and written the music so they have a real ownership over it which I think they really appreciate.” UK Film Council". Film-council.co.uk. It was only in 2008 that it became illegal to encourage homophobic hatred, and in 2013 when gay marriage was made legal across the UK. The actions that the character, Luke, takes are no less frequent, serious or impactful now than they were in 2008.

All of the child actors are willing to lose their inhibitions and really do put their all into the performance. However, at times the technical side worked to the detriment of the hard-working students. Odd soundscapes, very loud music and unnecessary lighting changes all over-complicate what could have been a beautifully formed, minimal piece of theatre.

This was likely my final show here at King’s, and I am glad to go out on something so vibrant. Ultimately, I had one last chance to work with some passionate young people, deep diving into character and performance with them, and hopefully they have learnt a thing or two along the way. The cast and crew all have long careers as part of the King’s Company, and I wish them all the best with their future productions.” Bush Theatre". Bush Theatre. 17 December 2005. Ali Hunt, who plays Tight, said the play had been quite challenging but also fun: “There are certain characters in the play who are really over the top and that is funny. But serious issues are explored and it is modern and relevant – I think it is something a lot of young people can look at and learn from. Most of us helped write the songs so it has been a creative collaboration making sure we chose the right sort of music. It’s a heartfelt story and has been a complete creative process. It’s going to look incredible and sound incredible – and we’re going to act it really well too!” In August 2021, Thorne delivered the Edinburgh TV Festival's prestigious MacTaggart Lecture. [53] He used the speech to discuss television's power as an "empathy box" in the living room of millions and its failings for neglecting a large and vibrant part of the populace by poorly representing the disabled community. Thorne points to the great suffering of disabled people during the COVID-19 pandemic in which the media rendered huge amounts of unnecessary deaths acceptable through usage of the term "underlying health condition". [53] The speech also outlined how television industry practice has been discriminatory towards disabled artists, and the dire need for the industry to commit to change, both off-screen and on; alongside Genevieve Barr and Katie Player, Thorne announced a pressure group called Underlying Health Condition which aims to elevate disabled voices in the industry. Thorne argues that more disabled stories written by disabled people and performed by disabled people would make visible what's invisible in the "empathy box" in the homes of the public and cause change to happen. In 2023, it was announced Thorne would write a television adaptation of Lord of the Flies. [35] On August 10, 2023 , it was announced Thorne would write Toxic Town, a series dramatizing the Corby toxic waste scandal. It will be executive produced by Charlie Brooker and Annabel Jones. Burying Your Brother in the Pavement – Productions". Royal National Theatre. Archived from the original on 17 June 2011 . Retrieved 13 March 2011. Wilson’s thrust stage inventively jigsaw’s out into the calm and intimate theatre setting that seats the audience on small cabaret-style tables. Basford’s spectacular opening monologue holds the audience in the palm of her hand, really connecting with the audience, with a rare maturity seldom seen in such a young performer. He is best known for writing the stage play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child, the films Wonder and Enola Holmes, and the television programme His Dark Materials.

This is certainly the case with Eagle House School’s production of Burying Your Brother in the Pavement. Brecht, physical theatre and puppetry are all thrown into the mix creating a slightly confused directorial concept that at times takes away from the story at hand. Rex Brookes as Stan was a favourite of mine – their wonderful presence and energy owned the loud costume impressively. Catherine Raynes and Robert Reed found a very convincing emotional truth as Courtney and Luke, achieving something actors of any age struggle with, let alone in Year 10!With such a mature and remarkable performance as Tom, it is difficult to praise Basford with the respect her performance deserves. The maturity of all the performances in this play are all the more excellent due to the playful and youthful treatment the cast provided to this challenging narrative.
