We’ve already confirmed it’s lighter, but does it live up to the other claims? Yes – very much so! Its motor is marginally more powerful – up from 2,100w on the Air to 2,200w – and the holes in its grille have apparently been redesigned to reduce noise. It is noticeably less loud in real-world use, and when measured with a decibel meter, it’s a whole two decibels quieter than the Air. If you buy the pink version of this Helios, Platinum Plus or GHD Gold, GHD will donate part of the proceeds to breast cancer charities. Each Helios in the pink collection has the Take Control Now slogan embossed onto the side.

In just one minute and six seconds, our hair went from wet out of the shower to dry. This is a minute faster than the Supersonic, which itself is a minute faster than the competition. It was slightly slower at drying our hair after a swim – 1 minute and 50 seconds. By comparison, the GHD Air took a little under four minutes for the latter. What’s more, despite this test only rough drying our hair, we didn’t feel the need to use straighteners to complete the look and smooth flyaways. A rarity. With the concentrator nozzle attached to the Helios – a nozzle which has been made thinner with a curved edge designed to reduce turbulence –it took us just two minutes and 20 seconds to style our hair. The extra weight even gave the GHD Air dryer a reassuring heft that made it feel expensive. This is missing somewhat with the GHD Helios. The Helios, in terms of weight, feels like many other dryers on the market. Even though it costs up to 10 times as much.
