About this deal

Was Once a Man: Name dropped by Dr. Cornelius after getting a good look at what they have turned Logan into. The special properties and history of Adamantium are not gone into. In this story, it just seems to be a very strong alloy.

The Alcoholic: Logan was not a good man before being kidnapped. His military discharge report cites "self-destructive behaviors...resulting from chronic alcohol abuse". He's later seen mixing whiskey and pills. When Bobby Bailey tries joining the army, he winds up being as a test subject in the Prometheus Project... Humans Are the Real Monsters: The story may be told from the perspective of seemingly ordinary scientists who think of themselves as pioneers trying to break new ground while controlling a monster who Was Once a Man, but it's clear from the start that they are the monsters of the story, with Logan just being the poor bastard victim who happened to fit their criteria. That silent yet pivotal figure is Bobby Bailey, a mentally damaged young man who's subjected to a government experiment that horrifically disfigures him. How did you decide that he wouldn't speak after the procedure? Did your conception of his character evolve over the years? It Seems Like a Waste … Of the Dramatic Situation”: Ryūsuke Hamaguchi’s Wheel of Fortune and Fantasy By Dan SullivanAnd I Must Scream: Logan is subjected to horrific experiments and goes in and out of awareness throughout due to being drugged out of his mind. He does end up screaming about how much pain he is in on multiple occasions. After leaving Marvel, Windsor-Smith became the creative director and lead artist at Valiant Comics, where he illustrated the company's revival of the 1960s Gold Key Comics character Solar, and created the original characters Archer and Armstrong. He was also the chief designer of the " Unity" crossover storyline. After leaving Valiant in 1993, Windsor-Smith did work through a number of publishers, including co-creating the vampiric character Rune with Chris Ulm, which was published as part of Malibu Comics' Ultraverse. Rune's adventures included a crossover with Conan that Windsor-Smith wrote and illustrated. He also provided art for the WildStorm Productions/ Image Comics storyline " Wildstorm Rising", though he later came to regret that work. He subsequently created an oversized anthology series, Barry Windsor-Smith: Storyteller through Dark Horse Comics, though it was cancelled after nine issues. Sanderson, Peter "1970s" in Gilbert (2008), p. 146: "Writer Roy Thomas and British artist Barry Smith (later known as Barry Windsor-Smith) launched Marvel's sword-and-sorcery comics with Conan the Barbarian, in a series that ran for 275 issues." Barry came to me with a completely penciled and written graphic novel. It was the about the development of the “mighty, raging fury” inside Bruce Banner, who, he revealed, was the product of an abusive home. I looked it over. I thought it was brilliant, one of the best comics stories I’d ever seen. I offered Barry a contract and an advance. He turned me down — temporarily. He proposed to finish the thing — then, if I would agree to publish it as created, no alterations whatsoever, he would sign a contract and take the money. I was willing to agree to that in writing on the spot, but he said, no, when it’s finished. Okay. Fine by me. I already knew, from what he’d shown me, that there’d be no problem. Didn't Think This Through: Making Wolverine into a living weapon and somehow expecting it to go well counts, though they initially thought he was just a regular, albeit tough, human. Continuing on with the experiments after realizing that he's already a nigh-indestructible, inhumanly strong mutant with a really bad temper is just begging to get hurt. It is of considerable importance to point out that this somewhat extraordinary story requires the use of what the comic book publishing world might consider profanity.Achievements in Ignorance: The project chose Logan because they thought he wouldn't be missed and because his military file showed he had remarkable stamina. They did not know he was a mutant with a powerful Healing Factor, Claws, and Super-Senses. The Anonymous Benefactor of the project did know, however, but chose not to inform the staff or the Professor. It's left ambiguous whether Logan would have even survived the bonding process without his healing. a b "1985 Haxtur Awards". Comic Book Awards Almanac. In the film, the artwork is used as that of character Jon Lansdale, a comic book illustrator played by Michael Caine. [25] Stone explains the hiring of Smith thus: Keith Haring says every audience member is an artist because they create the meaning of a piece of art By Jon Sands The story is centered most on a pair of families and the other characters that shape their lives. At its center is Bobby Bailey, perhaps the most tragic of all the characters in this book. To tell Bobby’s story, Monsters jumps through time, adeptly doing so in ways that sow a heightened sense of connection between plot points, heightening the story’s significance rather than making it feel excessive, novel, or contrived.

Regarding the style and technique; Barry both wrote and illustrated Monsters. It’s clear that he used his 37 years wisely, as every single piece of every panel is completely necessary. There’s no fluff here. Harvey Award Nominees and Winners". Comic Book Awards Almanac. Archived from the original on 7 March 2016 . Retrieved 4 February 2016. The memory erasure/mind control seems to be a purely chemical/mechanical process. Later stories would include a telepathic mutant assisting with this step of the process. Censor Shadow: While he's nude for the majority of the story, Logan always has his parts obscured by either a shadow or a convenient piece of technology.Neither do I see the point of the experimentation. The Nazi scientists horrifically deform their test subjects - to what end? Who wants an oversized, lumbering creature with the mind of a child who can barely walk? Why would any military pour so much money into such a useless end goal?! A weird but ultimately boring mash-up of Captain America, the Hulk, The Shining, and domestic tragedy begins with an army recruiter in the 1960s delivering up a prospective candidate for a dubious super-soldier program. Gone Horribly Right: The virtual simulation that allows Logan to massacre the staff. It is designed to hone his current animalistic mindset into a more focused and deliberate method. The trauma and catharsis of the simulation actually allow Logan to wake up in the real world and escape.

Red Herring: The unnamed "Professor" leading the project is a thin bald white man, and is introduced with his glasses refracting the words in the report he is reading, from "Experiment X" into "x men". This would readers to naturally assume that he is Charles Xavier, with the twist that Logan's mentor was behind his torture all along. He's actually a different character entirely, who in this series has No Name Given. A later comic revealed he was using the alias of "Professor Andre Thorton", with his real name being "Trett Hudson". A Real Slut in the Making: Melissa Febos’s Girlhood Through the Lens of Silvia Federici's Witches, Witch-Hunting, and Women By Corinne Manning Implacable Man: One of the goals of the project is to create one. Logan was already superhumanly tough, but once he gains the Adamantium skeleton, he takes it to a new level. [1] [2] He displayed artistic abilities at an early age and practiced drawing by copying Wally Wood artwork in Mad magazine and the works of Leonardo da Vinci, with little regard for what was or wasn't considered fine art. [3] His parents supported him in following an arts education and he attended East Ham Technical College for three years, earning degrees in Industrial Design and Illustration. Nor do I see what the allusions to Mary Shelley’s Frankenstein did for this book. The project to transform Bobby Bailey into the monster on the cover is called Prometheus and the subtitle to Shelley’s novel is “The Modern Prometheus”. The final part of the book takes place in Schongau, which is near Ingolstadt, a prominent place in Frankenstein. Other pointlessly derivative literary allusions is having a couple of characters who essentially have the Shining in all but name. At its heart, Monsters is a tender and involved family drama, but it comes dressed in not one but two layers of fantasy: mad Nazi scientists and a supernatural subplot involving ghosts and psychic powers. Intriguingly, one comics expert I spoke to told me that it started life all those years ago as a Hulk story. With its super-powered, lonely monster being pursued by a furious military man, the suggestion sounds very plausible.
