About this deal

In principle hanging lining paper is similar to hanging wallpaper with a few subtle differences, which we will tell you here. If you are wallpapering new plaster you will need a light grade lining paper as the wall will be completely smooth. This adds a little extra insulation and provides a great blank canvas for painting.

Erfurt Smooth 1400 grade Lining paper from B&Q is a well-known brand and a good choice for covering walls. 3. 1700-2000 grade lining paper Both are relatively similar, although lining paper does have the advantage of simplicity. Freshly plastered walls will need to dry out completely before being adequately primed, so the plaster doesn’t absorb the moisture from your paint. You can do so using 1-2 coats of a specialist primer or a watered-down version of paint. Failure to do so properly can result in paint peeling off or wearing off further down the line when cleaning. What grade lining paper you use on a decorating project will be determined by the condition of the walls, how much preparation is needed and whether you are going to paint or wallpaper over the lining paper. When wetted with paste wallpaper expands, it contracts/shrinks as it dries and can sometimes leave small gaps between the lengths of wallpaper. Lining paper can help prevent your wallpaper from shrinking as it holds the wallpaper in place, thereby reducing the possibility of any gaps forming.Get a spirit level and mark a horizontal line across the wall from corner to corner. Measure how far it is from corner to corner. Now get your lining paper and cut — add an extra 100-200mm to overlap and cut into the corner. Now cut enough full length strips to cover the wall. You should need around five strips. Lower grades like 800-1000 are the best choice if you’re redecorating walls that are in a decent condition and you want a smooth surface to make things easier. If you are hanging lining paper like this 1200 grade lining paper from B&Q horizontally you need to mark down around 10cm from the ceiling. Now measure each roll width — typically 53cm down the wall to see what size strip you have at the bottom. If you have a skinny strip, start further up the wall. The common roll size for linen paper is 10m x 53cm. This means in a typical size room with 2.4m high walls you can expect to get four drops on straight ceiling to floor drops. So you will need around three rolls per wall depending on how many fixtures — doors, windows — you have. Lining paper can improve your walls’ insulation properties, making it harder for heat to pass through. That’s especially true for thermal lining paper, which can reduce heat loss by 15%. The result is a more thermally efficient space, which is easier to keep warm – reducing your heating bills over time. WHAT GRADE OF LINING PAPER IS BEST FOR ME?

If you’re still wondering what lining paper is and what it is used for, let’s start at the beginning. Lining paper (sometimes called wallpaper liner) is a wall covering that’s designed to prepare your wall for decoration, prior to applying your chosen wallpaper or paint. Ideally try to introduce some gentle ambient heat into the area where the lining paper is to help it dry properly. This will also help the paint dry faster so you can use the room sooner. How many drops does a roll of lining paper do?

Now repeat on the next strip of lining paper so you have two ready to go. Once you have put up the first strip, paste the third strip, then put up the second and then paste the fourth etc. This helps the paste soak into the paper and gives it time to expand and lessens the chances of the edges overlapping. As with lining paper, the result is hopefully a perfectly smooth wall that’s ready to be decorated. However, don’t make the mistake of thinking that plastering is an alternative to lining paper or vice versa. If you’re redecorating your walls, you may feel confused about which processes you’ll need to do. Lining paper vs plastering, lining paper vs skimming – how can you tell which will give you the perfect finish you’re after?

When preparing your walls, you may be wondering whether existing lining paper is a suitable surface for application. In short, it comes down to the condition of your existing paper. If joints are loose or corners are peeling, you’ll need to remove your existing lining paper. However, you can paper over existing lining paper if the wear and tear is merely superficial.
