About this deal

The mouth-to-muscle time for Beta Fuel is simply superior. Given its much higher sugar content, a significant spike in blood sugar level is not surprising. However, what goes up must come down. Blood sugar peaks and troughs can be detrimental to performance.

Strength of taste: With taste being a personal preference, I've chosen to quantify strength of taste instead. Here I've opted for four tiers: Mild, slightly strong, strong, and very strong. During long bouts of exercise such as a marathon, it’s advisable to consume around 60-90g of carbs per hour, which would typically be two to five gels, one taken every 15-20 minutes or so. In practical terms this can be a bit too much to carry and consume, so many runners aim to take a gel every 30-40 minutes or so, starting from about 30-45 minutes into their run. Do pro marathon runners use gels?

Go, on the other hand, provides a “steadier” experience. I never get that “boosted” feeling, which I used to think was a negative. But I have since learned to appreciate sports nutrition that doesn’t spike my blood sugar level. Nootropics are supplements that can improve or maintain peak cognitive performance such as attention, focus, creativity, motivation, memory and so on. We've combined our innovative Beta Fuel Energy Gel with nootropics to offer endurance athletes a complete energy source for both body and mind because you need peak mental function when the demands are most physical. Through our Performance Solutions team, we have worked closely with elite athletes in the research and development of the new Beta Fuel range to bring you a scientifically superior fuel in a range of formats that allow you to use +17% more carbohydrate (O’Brien et al, 2013). The Science in Sport Beta Fuel range provides a variety of performance solutions to choose from to build your ultimate nutrition strategy. You might already have used our SiS Beta Fuel Powder, so other than having new SiS Beta Fuel options in Gels and Chews, what is different about it?

If you avoid using gels because of past gastrointestinal problems, Maurten’s gels are worth trying. I have not experienced significant stomach issues while using Maurten’s products, which have been my go-to for my past few marathons. O’Brien, W. J., Stannard, S. R., Clarke, J. A., & Rowlands, D. S. (2013). Fructose–maltodextrin ratio governs exogenous and other CHO oxidation and performance. Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise, 45(9), 1814-1824. We recommend consuming 50g (3 scoops) with 500ml of water every 45-60 min of exercise or you can consume up to 4 servings per day with or between meals as part of a carbohydrate loading strategy in the run up to an event. Once prepared consume within 24 hours. What our customer’s say:

Those with sensitive stomachs might also prefer to take on solids – such as energy chews or bars – which can also provide some welcome variety in texture and flavour and so work well if running for long periods of time. The Science In Sport Beta Fuel Gel crams a ridiculously high amount of carbs into an easy-to-consume and perfectly edible product. The ratio of carbs to fructose aims to be kind on the stomach, and during testing I've been thoroughly impressed. And though the price seems quite high, for what they deliver they actually work out quite good value – if you need the carbs. The new SiS Beta Fuel is a performance solution for any endurance athlete that trains/competes in sessions/events over ~2 hours. About The SiS Beta Fuel Range

The SiS Beta Fuel gel contains 40g of carbohydrate also at the 1:0.8 ratio of maltodextrin to fructose. The SiS Beta Fuel gel with nootropics also contains 40g carbohydrate, but with cognitive enhancing nootropic compounds that give you that mental lift you might need, especially at the latter phases of exercise. The SIS Beta Fuel manages to squeeze 80g of stomach-friendly carbs into a 500ml bottle. The 2:1 ratio maltodextrin:fructose solution allows you to process a bottle per hour, allowing an intake of 240g of carbs within a three-hour race. Quite simply, I find this a lot easier to get on board during high-intensity races. It takes around 500g of carbohydrate to fill your glycogen stores and, at most, this will last you for 60-90 minutes of running at 55-75 percent of your maximal heart rate,' explains leading sports dietician Renee McGregor. 'The faster you go, the sooner your stores will deplete.'

Beta Fuel works by providing these two different forms of carbohydrate which can be simultaneously absorbed. What’s new? Energy powders and drinks are just one of many formats available at Science in Sport, from GO Energy Bakes to GO Energy Bars and GO Isotonic Energy Gels to Beta Fuel Chews. But we didn’t stop there. Since originally developing SiS Beta Fuel with maltodextrin and fructose at a ratio of 2:1, we have continued to evolve it and now we are introducing a new, enhanced version of SiS Beta Fuel, not only as a powder, but as a new range of products that provide a complete fuelling solution. O’Brien, W. J., & Rowlands, D. S. (2011). Fructose-maltodextrin ratio in a carbohydrate-electrolyte solution differentially affects exogenous carbohydrate oxidation rate, gut comfort, and performance. American Journal of Physiology-Gastrointestinal and Liver Physiology, 300(1), G181-G189. However, as the reporter says, that’s an awful lot of carbs in 500ml and you would have to ride at some tempo to need that many in so little fluid (I.e. you may as well have a gel!)Developed in close collaboration with elite athletes, our Performance Solutions team has invested significant efforts in research and development to create a scientifically superior fuel with the Beta Fuel range. Through rigorous studies and testing, we have demonstrated that our gel offers substantial advantages over traditional ratios. Studies conducted by O'Brien et al in 2013 have shown that athletes using Beta Fuel can effectively utilize over 17% more carbohydrate, resulting in enhanced performance and endurance. SIS might be the better-known brand, but Maurten was the first to create a gel with a 1:0.8 ratio of glucose to fructose, and it's a brand that is not afraid to follow science to improve its product. To this end, the Gel 100 is more like jelly than gel thanks to its Hydrogel formula which is made using pectin (from fruit fibre) and alginate (from seaweed). Fructose has a different transporter than glucose, a dual source formulation allows for greater carbohydrate delivery to our muscles during exercise, therefore increasing how much carbohydrate we can use. The GO Isotonic is the World’s first Isotonic energy gel, and chances are you might have come across one, it’s the OG of endurance nutrition and as the adage goes, if it’s not broken, don’t fix it! Being an Isotonic gel, this means you won’t need any additional liquid when taking the product, the mixture has the correct balance of water/ carbohydrate and electrolytes. Take a 75mg caffeine gel one hour before you are due to finish training or racing to provide increased focus
