About this deal

Lucy is an author I first came to know through a speaking gig she held in Beijing, China. From that moment I recognised a true social impact warrior- a rare thing in today's society. She is a woman who lives and breathes for-purpose, and is not just someone who preaches it without action. (Her book literally funds birth kits in countries including the DRC... a la Edith. So. Damn. Cool.) The author blurb that has accompanied my latest book reads, “While some find Lucy’s memoir hard to believe, The Manuscript is her first work of fiction.” Ha! I wrote that myself. I’ve published three books in three genres – a childbirth guide for men, my memoir and now a novel. All three are based on truth. All three with varying ratios of fact to fiction. Edith was born to a strong intellectual mother and this paved the way for her becoming the woman she became. The Manuscript is candid, raw and intriguing; filled with laugh-out-loud moments it also has depth, with a lot of fact mixed in with the fiction. Lucy Bloom (born Lucy Schaffler; [1] 26 November 1973) is the former Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Sunrise Cambodia and the former CEO of Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia. She is now a full time speaker and author. [2] Personal life [ edit ]

Cleverly plotted with interweaving loops and connections that will leave you speechless. No character is safe from Bloom's authorial sword. Bloom worked for a short time as a jillaroo after graduating from high school before dropping out of university. Later, she worked at advertising agency Pilgrim International on cause-related accounts such as Amnesty International and World Vision before she established her own boutique advertising agency, Pure Graphics, which she led for 20 years. [3] In 2004 she trained as a doula and created a childbirth education program for men, Beer + Bubs. [4]

Book reviews for The Manuscript

Each encounter has its own flavour and drama. Like sliding doors, two scenarios sometimes play out piquing outcomes. What a great and intriguing book. Loved the raw and flawed characters and the journey to places not many of us have been. Bloom began volunteering in communications for Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia in 2004, and became a prodigious fundraiser; in 2012 was appointed CEO of the organization. But in 2015, Bloom testified before the Royal Commission into Institutional Responses to Child Sexual Abuse about abuse she suffered at the hands of a former schoolmaster--and lost her job a month later. [3] Hamlin Fistula merely said "Lucy Perry has now left Hamlin"; Bloom herself said she was devastated. [5] In October 2015 Bloom was appointed CEO (Australia) of Sunrise Cambodia, a Cambodia-based not-for-profit founded by Geraldine Cox. [6] Cox offered Bloom the position the day after appearing on the ABC program Australian Story. [7]

I glanced down while Ice Cream Man looked at the moving images on his mega TV, and I saw with complete horror that my feet were shedding their skin, right there in his living room, like flipping twin cicadas shedding their shells. The perfect "Imperfect MC": we're led to believe that the MC is flawed, and that her journey is not a perfect one. However, the MC is constantly fawned upon by those around her. She's hot, successful, and people are drawn to her. Other characters are constantly falling all over her, marvelling at how good she looks, how lean she is, how talented. Her main "flaws" seem to be that she is a workaholic (which is not a bad thing in and of itself, and throughout the text workaholic traits are framed as positives, undermining authorial intent), and that she is a divorcee (please don't get me started on the "ruined woman" divorcee trope, even if it isn't so blatant here). The MC is unrelatable; even when we're told she has flaws, she is shown in a completely different light. The grit in a good novel comes from the truth telling of charming and horrid observations of real life, real human detail and actual happenings which give a plot the fertile garden from which the story sprouts.
