About this deal

The Monarch 5 has a longer 19.5 millimeters of eye relief--very good. The Monarch 7 has a shorter eye relief of 17.2 millimeters--average, which may cause some eyeglass wearers not to see both edges of the entire field of view. Fully experience everything nature has to offer thanks to the MONARCH M5’s high optical performance. The binoculars feature fully multi-layer coated lenses and prisms, as well as a Dielectric high-reflective multilayer prism coating to ensure superior transmittance uniformity across the visible range, which results in brighter images and more natural colours. Meanwhile, its phase-correction coating minimises the loss of resolution to deliver high-contrast images. In this review, we look atNikon's new version of theever-popular mid-priced Monarch binocular, the Monarch 5. The Monarch 7 eyepiece was designed with a wider field of view. The field of view is measured both as degrees and the width of view in feet at 1000 yards distance. The field of view for Monarch 5 is 330 feet at 1000 yards, which is a fairly narrow field of view. The Monarch 7 has a field of view of 420 feet at 1000 yards, which is considered a wide field of view. The Monarch 7 has a wider field of view allowing you to locate moving birds more easily.

Really, that's only 5 inches difference. Not that much. Reviewers who have carefully measured the close focus distance have all discovered that the actual binoculars focus down to 7 feet or less--the rated number should be considered a maximum. 8 feet or less for close focus is good for these binoculars. Cameras – LCD screen is heavily worn either by de-lamination or has scratches to it. Rubber grips are starting to come away from the body. In 2012, Nikon changed the name on one of the most popular binoculars in the history of optics. The Nikon Monarch ATB became the Nikon Monarch 5. It seems to have almost exactly the same optical qualities and mechanics, the only significant change being the printing on the body of the binocular. Some of the very best and expensive binoculars close focus to 6 or even 5 feet! The Monarch 5 is listed at 7.8 feet close focus. The close focus distance of the Monarch 7 is listed at 8.2 feet. Monarch 5 wins? We use our Monarch's for bird watching, but we know that hunters also love them for their crisp, clear images and lightweight, rugged construction as well.

What's the difference between the model 5 and model 7 versions of the Nikon Monarch birding binoculars?

We consider this binocular a best buy in its price range. Its resolution and brightness compare well even when competing against binoculars costing up to twice as much. The main difference between the Nikon Monarch 5 and Monarch 7 binoculars is the field of view and eye relief. I shopped and shopped and ended up getting my binocs at a super deal, terrific price ---- on LLBean. I wrote an article on choosing binoculars for beginning birders and discussed all the optical parameters and what they mean ( here).]

Our Verdict

Dielectric high-reflective multilayer prism coating ensures superior transmittance uniformity across the visible range, resulting in brighter images and more natural colours
