About this deal

Once clipped in on the bike, the unit feels extremely stable and the ride feel is superb. Not only does it feel better than most of the competition, the Neo 2T simulates a wide range of surfaces including regular roads, cobblestones, gravel and dirt roads. When used with Tacx Films or Zwift, this provides a truly unique ride experience, and in a positive way.

So where does the Tacx Neo 2T outshine its rivals? There’s the ‘road feel’ that Robinson alluded to, and that will be important to some users who want that immersive, ‘gamification’ experience. But, for me, the main reasons to opt for the Neo 2T come down to two aspects. Note that Tacx has a complete suite of training apps that they sell like other 3rd party app providers do. What’s notable about that is that’s where you’ll be able to see the pedaling metrics these days. Tacx says that’s coming to 3rd party apps soonish (and also likely via the ANT+ standards around it too). But today that advanced data is only shown in the Tacx app – and frankly, very few of you are using that (I’m not one of those people either). The design of the NEO 2 Smart allows a few degrees of movement to the left and right while cycling. Its frame follows the natural course of your body, bringing you a certain freedom of movement that improves the cycling feeling. In the big chain ring, especially when in sim mode, I had a lot of vibrations with a deep tone. You could feel the vibrations through the pedals. But more annoying was the noise it made through the floor. You could here from different levels in the house. The NEO 2 Smart has been equipped with an high-quality chipset that enables smoother and more responsive control of the NEO motor. This leads to a quieter indoor cycling experience and paves the way for new and immersive features. With the new pedal stroke analysis function, power distribution and driving performance can be improved. A capacitive left and right detection sensor has been added to allow the bike trainer to measure the exact position of both legs. The familiar features of the NEO Smart are still available. Like Road Feel, with which you can experience the vibrating feeling of driving on cobblestones, gravel and many other road surfaces (in Tacx Films and Zwift). And this exciting feeling of accelerating into a descent after reaching the top of a mountain is simulated with the Descent simulation. Like the NEO, it is equipped with dynamic inertia. In contrast to the mass inertia of a flywheel, the dynamic inertia compensates for weight, speed and angle of inclination, significantly improving the riding experience. With the isoconical and isotonic training modes, you train with a fixed force or speed to improve your pedal stroke. These modes are available for free in the Tacx Utility App.

The NEO 2 was already equipped with a capacitive left and right detection sensor that accurately measures the exact position of both your legs. By adding standard ANT+ Cycling dynamics, you can now analyse your pedal stroke via the software of third parties; for example on a Garmin Edge bike computer.Looking at things, the NEO 2 and Stages are very close together, with the NEO 2 often below the Stages LR, where it should be. The SRM EXAKT pedals? Sigh…always le sigh. The Tacx NEO 2 Smart measures your power with incredible precision, making sure you that your data is accurate and reliable. This Smart trainer is the only trainer that doesn’t require a calibration process. This Smart trainer measures your power accurately within 1%. But that doesn’t tell us accuracy. Instead, it just tells us responsiveness – which is fantastically fast. Perhaps even a bit too fast for my legs last night. It’s funny, I haven’t done this test on the Neo in a while (like a year+), and I forgot just how fast it is compared to all other trainers out there. It’s a test I do on every trainer I get, and usually the response time is about 3-5 seconds for these wattage jumps (~150w to ~410w). The Neo 2 though? About 1.5-2 seconds. Damn. The SPECIAL EDITION of the Garmin Tacx® NEO 2 Smart premium bike trainer ranks between the NEO 2 Smart and its big brother NEO 2T in terms of performance and function. The trainer with direct drive also easily takes on thru axles (142mm/148mm) and has the trainer axle as well as the improved freewheel system of the more powerful NEO 2T! It can be used with and without power supply. All these vibrations start with 150 watts of resistance. So a fraction of what the trainer should take. Sure, it gets it right about 95% of the time, but there are cases above where you see that blue line waver – primarily when I’m shifting cadences significantly (i.e. from 60RPM to 90RPM). Minor shifts and it appears spot-on. We’ll dig into this more over the other files.
