Of course this means that such a work is largely boring and not nearly as exciting as it sounds on paper, but there are some real gems that are of particular interest to me as a lover of Tolkien. If you want to write essays about this stuff, you had better read it and the following. However, if you just like Tolkien and want to know what's in here, read on. The Return of the Shadow is the first volume of the The History of The Lord of the Rings and the sixth volume of The History of Middle-earth. It is a history of the creation of The Lord of the Rings, a fascinating study of Tolkien's great masterpiece, from its inception to the end of the first volume, The Fellowship of the Ring. The Road to Middle-earth · The Keys of Middle-earth · The Lord of the Rings: A Reader's Companion ·

A Middle English Vocabulary · Sir Gawain and the Green Knight · Ancrene Wisse · The Old English Exodus Things certainly improved (in my opinion at least) at an accelerated rate. Even the introduction of Trotter proved to be less twee than I thought it would be. A wooden-shoe-wearing hobbit-ranger certainly seems odd on the face of it, but while definitely an inferior character when compared to Aragorn, the story that Tolkien started to develop for Trotter, with the hints of both a connection to Gandalf and Bilbo and a dark and dangerous past, were actually somewhat intriguing. It is also surprising to note, as Christopher does, how close to the finished text (at least in terms of general story elements and overall plot) many sections of even the earliest drafts are once things apparently started gelling for Tolkien and the idea that this was ‘merely’ a children’s book sequel were more or less quashed. There were still many changes (especially in regards to the number of hobbits involved in the story, their names and relationships, and the ultimate make-up of the fellowship of the ring itself, not to mention the introduction of the character and storyline of Aragorn) and much of the text would still be further refined, but one can definitely see something very much recognizable as ‘the Lord of the Rings’ even in these early drafts. Version IV: Bilbo is not married and adopts his cousin Bingo Bolger. Bilbo disappears from the Shire at age 111 and Bingo Bolger-Baggins gives the party when he is 72 years old. [3] Some information concerning the appendices and a soon-abandoned sequel to the novel can also be found in volume 12, The Peoples of Middle-earth. In terms of public awareness, the debate about Putin’s language is a good example of “those who don’t know talk, and those who know don’t talk”. It is easy to think of Putin as a poker addict trying to bluster his way out of a bad bet. Eventually he must fold. US civilian and military officials suffer from no such complacency. Many have taken part in war game exercises where the use of low-yielding tactical nuclear weapons as often as not escalates to strategic nuclear exchange — doomsday, in plain English.

A Középfölde históriája-sorozat legolvasmányosabb darabja (eddig).

After all that Tolkien had imagined in his mythology, it's hilarious to see him claiming to have used up all his good ideas in The Hobbit. Bingó és társai, élükön Kótogi (azaz Frodó és Aragorn, ahogy megismertük őket végül) kalandjai hol még kiforratlanok, hol pedig meglepően sokfelé ágazóan alakultak a végleges formájukba. It is also a potentially catastrophic one. If Putin’s aim is to scare the west, he is failing. Nato keeps stepping up its supplies to Ukraine. The question is what he would do if he thought Russian defeat was inescapable. Putin keeps implying he knows exactly what steps he would take. Is he bluffing? It is plausible even he does not know the answer. This book covers a larger part of the content of The Fellowship of the Ring. It encompasses TLotR's three initial stages of composition or, as Christopher Tolkien calls them, "phases", including what Tolkien later called "the crucial chapter" which sets up the central plot, " The Shadow of the Past" [1]. It finishes with the Fellowship of the Ring entering the Mines of Moria. Version I: Bilbo gives the party and he is 70 years old. There is no sign of Gandalf or any heir and Bilbo does not use the One Ring to disappear. The final words of his speech announce that he plans to get married. A narrator frankly explains that the story of the party was just to explain what Bilbo had been doing before going on to the real story, the tale of one of his descendants. The reason for Bilbo's departure is a flare-up of his Tookish side and the expiration of his wealth, with no mention of his Ring. [6]
