From the design of the thistle ferrules, you can tell this is a top quality piece of bagpipes. The bagpipes feature 4 hand-engraved ferrules with solid aluminum material created by the pipe maker himself on the drones of the bagpipes. In our opinion, you’d be hard-pressed not to be delighted with these bagpipes, and probably won’t need to look elsewhere for other options. These bagpipes are highly durable also, and all the pieces fit well together, so they should last you a nice long time. For the owner, the MacCallam comes ready with a range of accessories that enhance its value and mobility. This is a recommended model as it includes a complimentary copy of Learning to Play Bagpipes by Shepherd as a well as a guide to get started with the instrument. Imitation ivory projecting mounts adds to the ability of MacCallum to precisely replicate Stuart’s quality set. Just like its SL1 sister version, the SL4 also features an ‘M’ marking on the middle tenor top ferrule. The same popular, MacCallum polypenco pipe chanter to create the 9 different notes you can get from your bagpipes is also available. In 2021 he was awarded his PhD from the University of St Andrews/The Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. His dissertation, Competitive Scottish Bagpipe Repertoire from 1947-2015: Convention, Change, and Innovation, explores the development of competition piping light music repertoire and the decision-making processes of competing pipers. Andrew has presented on his research at universities, academic conferences, and piping workshops; the latter being an influence of his belief in a holistic approach to piping education. As a part of this holistic approach, Andrew’s musical teaching method is heavily influenced by Dalcroze Eurhythmics. Today, Andrew is a piping teacher and Piping and Drumming Qualifications Board assessor for The National Piping Centre in Glasgow. His teaching career started in the early 1990s and since then he has been involved in teaching several champion pipers who have won Silver Medals, Gold Medals, Former Winners MSR, Clasps and the Silver Chanter.

Getting used to the blowing technique and maintaining constant pressure on the bag can be challenging at first. Coordinating the drones, chanter and bag takes a lot of practice. Fingerwork patterns can also be difficult to master. Go slowly and be patient with yourself as you build these skills.
