About this deal

There are pneumatic tyres that are effectively puncture-proof, significantly faster, and comfier. For the overwhelming majority of people these represent a far better compromise. At Chain Reaction Cycles we found 158 products from Continental, of which 125 were in the Tyres category. All three required a drop of superglue to plug the holes. A reminder of some vulnerability but comparable with other soft compound tyres I’ve run long term and in similar contexts. Wear has been moderate. Some suggested they’ve had 3,500 from a rear, 5000 up front. 2,500 Spring/Summer miles, wear is localised-along the centre-strip-where I’d expect, given their profile. There’s been no issue with cuts, or similar vulnerability to date and I’ve not been overly vigilant when it comes to brushing casings down, either. One is the traditional size like 700x28c or 27.5x2.2. The first figure is the tyre diameter(size). The second is tyre width. Note: road bike sizes are in mm, MTB sizes are in inches. With a thin tread cap, this will inevitably be light. Even a file tread works well on gravel, but no tyre in this category is meant for mud. A thin, light tread cap reduces mileage and puncture resistance. Tubeless compatibility

The speed reflex certainly live up to their moniker. Now, shod with the Schwalbe Marathon Mondial Double Defence Tyres my Univega is perky and engaging on metalled roads. However, the Speed Reflex brought things up a few notches. Manhole covers and similar ironworks call for a bit of caution, especially when the rains break after a prolonged dry spell but negotiated sensibly, I’ve not had any unwelcome surprises.

The other set of figures you may see is ETRTO sizing like this 28-622. The first number here is tyre width while the second number relates to wheel diameter. Tyres will generally enlist a variety of compounds for different performance enhancements. Along the centre of the tyre, a harder compound tends to be used, being longer lasting and more resistant to punctures. Its tread cap is thin, so don’t expect huge mileage, but this and the supple 180tpi carcass keep weight down and allow the tyre to perform well on a variety of surfaces.

The Micro-diamond tread patterns grips well on loose and greasy surfaces, giving the tyre true all-roads capability, and extends over the ‘skinwall’ sidewalls for added protection, making the tyre suitable for use with a bottle dynamo. Here is a comparrison chart for traditional and ETRTO sizing to help you choose the correct tyre size. ETRTO Number While gravel and adventure bikes started out with road-sized 700C wheels, many now use smaller diameter 650B rims which allow a much fatter tyre for greater grip and comfort but are roughly the same overall diameter. We've rounded up and tested the very best 650B gravel tyres for both wet and dry conditions, so whether you're upgrading or converting, we've got it covered. Two Safety System anti-puncture layers stiffen the tyre enough to lessen ride comfort and increase rolling resistance when compared with the lightest rubber in the category, but for many this will be an acceptable trade-off for reduced susceptibility to flats. Their big sections deliver a magic carpet ride quality, the sort that smooths out washboard tarmac and unavoidable/unexpected bigger bumps. Pushed along wet 1in7s at 30mph, they’ve never once lost their bite, or missed a beat, even when morale and concentration have been flagging.Lighter and more expensive than a steel wire bead, this feature also makes it easier to carry a spare. Weight

No matter what type of bike product your buying, from the simple accessories through to the full setup of your custom built road bike, there are lots of important considerations that you should take into account, especially when you’re shopping online and unable to test the product first. This is especially true when you’re buying products like Tyres. Their size and the wire beads do mean, for the most part, they're a doddle to mount, with directional arrows to help. You might want a single lever to scoop them aboard deep-section hoops, otherwise it's a tool-free affair, requiring just a pair of strong thumbs. Belt 'n' braces Puncture protection and reliability is taken care of thanks to Continental's renowned hard wearing tread compound and two SafetySystem anti puncture layers beneath the tread.

After 600 miles there's little sign of wear, let alone cuts or similar damage, and I've ridden through hedge clippings and shards of glass – some deliberate, some unavoidable. Value Larger air-chamber tyres for road and gravel are mostly 30-50mm wide and made to fit 700C/29er (622mm) and 650B/27.5" (584mm) rims. As a rule, wider is better for comfort and rolling resistance – but inevitably heavier. Folding bead
