About this deal

Where pot sizes are specified in a range (e.g. 30-43 litre pot) we can not supply a specific pot size, you will be supplied with which ever size is available at the time. The tree(s) will be within the specified height range. A hole no less than 1m across and 25cm deep should be dug when planting your conifer. Add organic material such as compost or manure to the hole, and fill it in carefully so that you don’t damage the roots. Dwarf conifers are not actually dwarf, but are just slower growing. They will eventually become larger and could outgrow their space. This is fairly common with most conifers as they grow, and they can be replaced when it happens. However, their size can be controlled to some extent by pruning and trimming them. Hedges — conifers make good hedges, when choosing plants for a hedge take into account the rate of growth and eventual height to ensure plants don’t outgrow the space available. Conifer hedges especially fast growing cultivars need regular maintenance and won’t tolerate clipping into old wood. See our list of conifers for hedgesfor suggestions

We have one of the widest range of trees in the UK, and for those plants which we cannot despatch next day we will normally despatch within 4 weeks. The despatch time for different products will be confirmed when products are added to your shopping basket Full Sun in cold climate preform better / Half Shade / Full Shade, in place with hot summer will grow better in half shade to full shadeConifers are available all year round in containers, from garden centres, nurseries and online suppliers. Most conifers for sale in garden centres and nurseries are small plants, usually in 2-3 litre pots; these settle into the ground well and will soon put on growth. You can buy large, specimen plants which, although costly, will give an instant effect. These semi-mature plants are harder to establish and require extra care in planting and watering. Moist and well drained means exactly what it sounds like. Soil is moist without being soggy because the texture of the soil allows excess moisture to drain away. Most plants like about 1 inch of water per week. Amending your soil with compost will help improve texture and water holding or draining capacity. A 3 inch layer of mulch will help to maintain soil moisture and studies have shown that mulched plants grow faster than non-mulched plants. Highly decorative, Chamaecyparis lawsoniana ‘Ellwoodii’ (Lawson Cypress) is an upright, evergreen shrub of dense columnar habit with short sprays of soft feathery, silver-blue foliage, turning steel-blue in winter. Slow-growing, 1-6 in. (2.5-15 cm) per year. Very versatile, it is a popular choice in a number of gardens. Adding year-round structure, it makes a wonderful specimen plant, adds vertical accent lines to the landscape, and is perfect for hedges and screens. They should be planted in full sun or partial shade, and are tolerant of most soil types, but will benefit from having compost or manure tilled into the soil prior to planting. CONTAINS MYCORRHIZAL FUNGI - A naturally occuring organism, Mycorrhizal Fungi has been benefiting plants in our world for millions of years. Rootgrow is a granular feed that is commonly used to promote vigourous and robust growth, even in poor soils

Water when normal rainfall does not provide the preferred 1 inch of moisture most plants prefer. Average water is needed during the growing season, but take care not to overwater. The first two years after a plant is installed, regular watering is important. The first year is critical. It is better to water once a week and water deeply, than to water frequently for a few minutes. Avoid those showing signs of stress or disease (yellowing or browning of foliage), or damage, like those with broken branches Newly planted conifers need very careful watering during the initial stages. They are drought proof once established and should not need too much watering, but they are very vulnerable to stress from drought if they are not watered thoroughly. Depending on the time of year we may supply freshly potted rootballed trees, if this is the case these trees can be treated as any potted conifer.

Plant Care

Plants can suffer from nutrient deficiencies. Overly acidic or alkaline conditions, dry spells and waterlogging can make it very difficult for plants to extract the right nutrients, and sometimes the soil doesn’t have the right nutrients to start with. Conifers are characterised by their foliage, which is either scale-like for example in pines or short, spiky and needle-like as in junipers. The foliage comes in various shades of green, gold, silver or blue and variegated combinations; some such as Cryptomeria japonica take on reddish hues in winter. In general : Chamaecyparis lawsoniana. Ellwoodii 9 cm dislike wet feet, therefore plant in well-drained soil which has been improved with some compost, you can improve soil drainage by mixing in some sand or grit to the planting holes. Chamaecyparis lawsoniana. Ellwoodii 9 cm have strong preference for sandy, acidic soils. At the start of winter water the Chamaecyparis lawsoniana. Ellwoodii 9 cm well so that they go into the winter with a moisture boost. As Chamaecyparis lawsoniana. Ellwoodii 9 cm are evergreen trees, they keep on dehydrating all winter long. Avoid shading the base of the plant to prevent the lower part also turning brown - it does not stand shade. Do not apply fertilizer until your trees have been in the ground for at least 6 -8 weeks. It could burn the new roots. During Feb and March add some Natural Kieserite (Magnesium Sulphate) on top of the soil to improve the foliage colour, if you cannot obtain it, organic fertilizer will suffice. Chamaecyparis lawsoniana. Ellwoodii 9 cm require occasional maintenance and upkeep, and should only be pruned to remove any dead and old wood. Multi Stem tree: Two or more stems arising from or near ground level, growing from one root system.

A few conifers such as yew and Thuja, can be pruned hard and will regrow. Most conifers will not regrow from old wood if you prune into it, so take care. Unlike other hardwood plants, conifers need very little pruning. However, if green branches appear in trees with coloured or variegated foliage, these should be pruned more often.Root-balled and bare-root conifers are available in late-autumn and winter and should be planted as soon as possible after they arrive
