These small piñatas are a fun way to brighten up any room, or could be used as individual party favors. The structure is made from cardboard – you can use old cereal boxes or similar and then decorate with tissue paper. As well as papier-mâché, piñatas can also be made from pottery or cloth. However, papier-mâché is fun and easy to make, and highly versatile as you can mold it into a variety of different shapes.
Cut up strips of newspaper. Take a strip and dip it into the p apier-mâché so that the underside of the strip is coated. Remove excess with your finger and add it to balloon,smoothing it down. Try to keep each strip as flat and as smooth as possible so that you can create a nice smooth surface for the base of the pinata. Repeat fully over the whole balloon until you have covered the balloon twice. Remember to leave it to dry full between layers or it won't set properly. Next take a sheet of tissue paper and fold it over several times horizontally to create a long strip about 4 inches wide. Cut along the folds until you end up with 4 or 5 long strips. Take each strip and fold them several times horizontally so that you end up with a folded piece of tissue paper around 7 x 4 inches, this will speed up the cutting process. Then using scissors make cuts about halfway across the tissue paper to create the frills. Once you unfold the strip you should have cuts all the way across it. Start creating your pinata at least a week before your party as you will need to allow the papier-mâché time to dry between coats. Blow up your balloon and rest it in a bowl to keep it stable.However, the indigenous peoples of Mesoamerica also had similar traditions. For example, the Aztecs had a ceremony to honor the birthday of the god Huitzilopochtli where they placed a clay pot full of goodies and decorated it with brightly colored feathers on top of a pole. The modern piñata has a few possible origins. It seems likely that the name “piñata” comes from the Italian word pignatta.
The Italians started a tradition of breaking a treat-filled container in the 14 th century, and from there it spread throughout Europe, including to Spain. The Spanish missionaries are credited with bringing the tradition to Mexico, where they used them as a religious tool.

The highlight of any child’s birthday party is having the kids take turns with a baseball bat to break the piñata until a shower of candy rains down on the excited guests.
