Successful businessman Jeremy Marks wasn't highly regarded by any of the members of the West London Archery Club. Most of them considered him a buffoon and a bore. But everyone was stunned when the fellow was murdered during a lull in the club's annual archery competition. He'd been shot with arrows from a longbow during a raging thunderstorm.

What I love about these books most of all is the feeling that this staff, as well as their neighbors who help "solve" the crimes, are family. They may not be related by blood, but they care for each other. They care for their employer so much that they risk their own safety at times to gather clues. I loved this book and enjoyed reading every word of it. I love the characters and the whole ‘family’ feel it has. I hope you’ll read this book, and this series, and that you’ll love it as much as I do. I even like that this book has departed from its norm and leaves a bit of a cliff-hanger for the end. I feel a set-up for a future story there :)So while living at Long Beach California, and despite being preoccupied with a full time job and the task of having to take care of two children, she began writing. She actually started by writing romances, an exercise that even saw her become a member of the Romance writers of America. Within no time Cheryl became a renowned and an accomplished American writer under the name Cheryl Lanham or simply under pseudonyms Sarah Temple and as Emily Brightwell that she used in a number of her writings. Actually, she has since written a number or romance novels as Sarah Temple, together with some young Adult novels under the name Cheryl Lanham, not to mention writing a number of series and books using the name Emily Brightwell, the author of the Mrs Jeffries mysteries.

Behind the scenes, Mrs. Jeffries has organized the household staff into its' efficient sleuthing team mode. Cook may be feeding pauper meals to the Inspector, but she still is sure to have tea and sweet buns for when other household staff members drop by to chat in the kitchen. Meanwhile Wiggins, Betsy and Smythe utilize their network of other household staffs for information; uncovering some unsavoury secrets that point to who the guilty party is and why. When a local woman is killed during a robbery, Blimpey Groggins claims his friend was wrongfully convicted. With a cold trail, tampered evidence, and only three weeks until the execution, Mrs. Jeffries and her team must work tirelessly to save an innocent man from the gallows. Get ready to uncover the mystery in Book 21. Mrs. Jeffries and the Best Laid Plans Olive Kettering was always eccentric, but recently her behavior had become downright peculiar. She'd joined an odd religious group, was estranged from her family, worked her servants mercilessly, and even insisted that there were people trying to harm her. Banker Lawrence Boyd didn't waste his time making friends, which is why hardly anyone grieves when he's found dead in his burnt-out studio..The Inspector and Mrs Jeffries is a book one of Mrs Jeffries series by Emily Brightwell. Inspector Gerald Witherspoon caught a case of the death of Dr Bartholomew Slocum at his surgery. At first, Inspector Gerald Witherspoon did not think it was murder until they found out that someone gave the doctor a deadly dose of poison. On realising it was murder Inspector Gerald Witherspoon started an investigation to find the killer with the help of his housekeeper Mrs Jeffries. The readers of The Inspector and Mrs Jeffries with continues to follow Inspector and Mrs Jeffries to see who is guilty. In Book 26, Inspector Witherspoon investigates a deceptive Yuletide murder case amidst wedding preparations. Lies, intrigue, and long-buried secrets emerge as he unravels the truth amidst uncooperative witnesses and sulking relatives. Mrs. Jeffries Speaks Her Mind

Mrs. Jeffries investigates the murder of wealthy widow Margaret Starling. Despite her charity work and church involvement, Margaret had her share of enemies. Join Mrs. Jeffries and Inspector Witherspoon as they uncover the truth in “ Mrs. Jeffries and the Alms of the Angel,” proving that justice doesn’t depend on popularity. Mrs. Jeffries Demands JusticeI have a feeling I will enjoy the other mysteries of the series. I have always liked unusual women characters in historical fiction. I would recommend this book to cozy mystery lovers and historical fiction readers. 🙂 In the last dozen years I've read about 6 of the 39 Mrs. Jeffries cozies, and enjoyed them as uncomplicated, cute, and very English mysteries. The writing fit the stories and the characters were the stars. Throughout, the theme of the "downstairs" inhabitants of Inspector Witherspoon's household not only being more than in service, but in pursuit of justice, came through clearly.

Harriet Andover had no intention of dying young like her silly siblings had. She intended to outlive them and outdo them as she always had. But Harriet discovers that the best intentions can lead to murder when she is strangled inside her mansion with a house full of holiday guests. As much as Inspector Witherspoon enjoys his job delivering justice, the last thing he wanted was a complicated murder case just a week before Christmas. This is a "cosy" in the real sense of the genre term: a highly unbelievable domesticated premise, a large cast of two dimensional stereotypes. Wiggins's repeated "cor blimey" was especially irritating raising the spectre of VanDyke's hideous accent in Disney's "Mary Poppins"...good lord. The plot here becomes so complicated you'd need algorithms or charts to follow the many unnecessary details only to discover that 90% is just there to obscure a fairly plain solution. Finally all this is wrapped up in a singularly undistinguished but adequate style. This book is part of a long-running series, but the author does a good job of including the necessary information about the main characters to bring readers who are new to the series up to speed. The reader is given the clues right along with Mrs. Jeffries and the Inspector, and will be able to figure out some, but probably not all, of the details of the case. I was pleased that all of the members of the household contribute equally to the case, without any one character dominating the book. Less satisfying is the fact that there seems to be less scenes showing the actual investigation. Things start coming together for Mrs. Jeffries and for Witherspoon, and the conclusion of the case makes sense with the clues that are given throughout the book. For light reading to pass the holidays along, this latest "Jeffries" only surprised me in that it was a bit of a slog and not all that rewarding in the end considering the reader has to plough through so much minutiae not once but twice: during some staff meetings and then also via the sherry-filled conversations this 'housekeeper' conducts with the Witherspoon wimp ...who apparently on an inspector's Victorian salary can keep a staff of four or more in his household. This premise is unique, with one similarity to a TV show I loved as a child, “Remington Steele”. Pierce Brosnan’s titular character was talented but initially, P.I. Laura Holt did the work using that name. Hepzibah Jeffries is a house manager and discreet sleuth, for a Scotland Yard archivist. Gerald Witherspoon was mistakenly credited for solving a case and ill prepared for promotion to a detective.Upon Mirabelle Daws’ murder during her journey from Australia to visit her sister, Inspector Witherspoon, and Mrs. Jeffries delve into the case. Unraveling the mystery in Book 14, they uncover surprising evidence of foul play in the most unexpected places, showcasing their exceptional investigative skills in this enthralling tale. Mrs. Jeffries Weeds the Plot Harriet Andover had no intention of dying young like her silly siblings had. She intended to outlive them and outdo them as she always had. But Harriet discovers that the best intentions can lead to murder when she is strangled inside her mansion with a house full of holiday guests. The marriageable daughters of the upper crust howl in outrage when the rich and handsome Lewis Banfield marries an artist's model. But Arlette Montrose Banfield is more than a pretty face: she's an intelligent and free-spirited woman. But not everyone approves of a modern woman. At the Banfield's ball, someone poisons the new bride's champagne.
