About this deal

Both rigid and flexi hose connections also come with several different methods of actually making the connection from the supply pipe to the tap. Normally, you can unscrew this fairly easily, although it may take a bit of force. If it feels very resistant, try not to force it and consider calling in a professional plumber. If it feels easy enough though, secure the tap itself with another wrench while you remove this section, to stop it moving around. 5. Find the the washer and replace it As I’m sure you can imagine, pillar taps are available in a huge range of styles and designs. Older style taps, with the cross bar at the top are normally referred to as Capstan Head taps.

In essence, a threaded spindle with a washer on one end and handle on the other lowers of raises (screws up or down) the washer in to and out of a seat in the base of the tap body to increase or decrease and stop the flow of water. Fibre tap washers are also often called vulcanised fibre washers because they are hardened by being treated with sulphur at high temperatures. They have the unique property among washers of expanding when they are wet. In the case of the snap ring, this is usually between the spout and the body and is sometimes hidden by a cover that is screwed down or held with a grub screw at the rear. Please can any plumbers help me? I am loosing my patience! I am trying to do the simplest of jobs - change a washing on a dripping bathroom tap.

Why do Taps Drip?

Turn off water supply: As with any plumbing task, always turn off the water supply before starting work on your taps. This will prevent any accidents or leaks during the process.

The first step is to turn off the water supply, unless you want to flood your bathroom or kitchen. There should be an isolation valve underneath the tap which can be used to turn off the water to that particular sink or, if you don’t have one of these, turn off the water at the mains. If you’re changing the tap washer on the hot water tap then you will need to turn off the boiler and immersion heater too. As pretty much all taps feature a screw fitting that connects your connector of choice to the actual tap, this in itself is a form of compression fitting, but instead of using an olive, normally a rubber seal is used to create the seal once the connector is screwed up.

How are Taps Connected to the Water Supply Pipe?

Hot water valves will have a red bottom seal, and cold water valves will have a blue bottom seal. The difference between the two is the direction in which the valve turns. If you’re unsure about any step in the process or if the tap body cover feels tight, don’t hesitate to consult a professional plumber for assistance. With everything now connected up it’s time to turn the water on and make sure everything is working and there aren’t any leaks.
