Sarkokoka: bolesti i paraziti Gardeners often use the word variety when referring to a specific plant, but the correct botanical term is 'cultivar'. Whichever word you use, it means a distinctive plant or plants, given a specific cultivar name and usually bred to enhance certain characteristics, such as flower or fruit size, colour, flavour or fragrance, plant size, hardiness, disease resistance, etc. Additionally, it is worth knowing that, botanically, variety has another meaning - it refers to a naturally-occurring distinct plant that only has slight differences in its looks. For example, Malva alcea var. fastigiata differs from typical plants by having an upright habit. cultivar ‘Dragon Gate’ –more compact, up to 1m (3¼ft) tall, with scented whiteflowers and red berries As if that were not enough, these fragrant little box cousins – both hailfrom the box family Buxaceae – alsomake wonderful dwarf hedges. Rarely exceeding 1m in height, they can makea fine – and extremely appealing – substitute for the dwarf hedging box buxus, especially now that the unsightly box blight has hit New Zealand.

A lovely evergreen shrub with dark green leaves (also known as the Sweet Box). This plant produces delicate flowers between December and February that have a powerful honey-like fragrance. The heady perfume carries some distance so it is very welcoming in the drab days of winter. The White Christmas Box are easy to grow due to a number of factors; they are somewhat drought tolerant, fairly low growing at 60cm and they even make good shrubs for patio pots where the fragrance can be enjoyed. They are also superb as specimen plants, ground cover or low hedges when established (they can be pruned). A slightly less vigorous variety to look out for is Sarcococca ruscifolia var. chinensis ‘Dragon Gate’. Collected in the hilly Hunan region of China by the revered British plantsman Roy Lancaster, it is a specimen for collectors. ‘Dragon’s Gate’ has the advantage of early flowering and a compact shape ideal for small gardens, but it is less hardy than the others, requiring some winter protection.Sarcococca species which are dwarf and have spreading rhizomatous growth (S. hookeriana and varieties) make ideal ground cover while the taller growing forms, and especially S. saligna, can be grown as a lowish hedge. The clump forming species, including the relatively newly introduced S. wallichii, S. confusa and S. ruscifolia, can brighten up dull corners of the garden where little else will thrive.
