About this deal

Slug fences surround an entire bed and serve as a slug barrier. To get inside, snails would have to overcome this obstacle. However, this is difficult because of the previously described structure of the snail fence – as long as care is taken to avoid gaps in the snail fence and also to avoid plant parts hanging over the slug barrier, which would act similar to a bridge. It is especially worthwhile to use copper or slug deterrent paint with cups, pots, and jars which have no safe edge or lid. I hope these ideas can be used to help you create slug-proof beds and to protect any vulnerable vegetables and flowers. There are lots of homemade deterrents that you can apparently sprinkle around your plants which in theory, should stop slugs. An advantage of these self-made garden bells is that their lid is removable when the inside conditions become too warm for the plants.

The original slug fence is effective because it has a special double-folded edge that irritates the slugs, preventing their passage. They tend to be nocturnal, though they like humid and damp conditions, so warm, wet weather can increase their active hours. In this case, one can consider removing nontransparent collars on sunny, dry days and only use them at night.Slug collars don’t restrict plant growth; foliage can grow over the top and roots underneath. They can stay in place all year, with no maintenance required. They have a highly durable design and are easy to clean. Slugs in gardens can cause heavy damage to leaves, resulting in large holes. These are irregular in shape, because slugs mouths are tongue-like with thousands of microscopic teeth. They do not eat in a typical bite-like way leaving circular holes like some caterpillars do. Slugs have been found to be repelled by copper in some studies. However, an RHS study found that copper-based barriers, for example copper tape, was ineffective. For this study, the RHS created a realistic garden scenario, rather than lab-controlled conditions.

With the glass bottles, it is a little more difficult to remove the bottom. This can be done either with a glass cutter or a cotton thread that is ignited. See here: Firstly the little blue pellets aren’t safe to have around if you have pets or young children who might digest them accidentally. It is also possible to make a lid by cutting a piece of wood, cardboard, or plastic that fits on or in the opening. Then drill or pierce holes in the lid, so that fresh air, rain, and irrigation water can get inside. Each line is connected to a pole of a rechargeable battery, and the battery is hidden in a waterproof case.In addition, when the plants outgrow the inside, it is possible to expand the space upwards with a mosquito net or a bed protection blanket. Regarding garden bells, on the other hand, the edge is not relevant because they normally stay closed.

The Spanish slug, or orange slug, is another giant slug that is particularly invasive. It originated from Spain and has since spread to the UK and across the globe. It is a rapidly-proliferating slug as it can mate with other slug species like the common red slug. The high-sided design also helps with plant growth and watering. It helps floppy leaves point upwards away from the soil, whilst not damaging leaf stems. It also keeps water in the soil around the roots when watered. The idea behind these barriers is that they stop the slugs from being able to crawl over them. Slugs apparently will not go over a 90-degree angle, you can look it up on YouTube, a few people have tested the theory and it seems to hold. It’s best to use old transparent storage containers. Again, the bottom of the vessels is carefully removed, and this allows you to slip them over the garden plants. You can set up traps to capture slugs and then dispose of them how you wish. There are lots of different ways to do this but one of the more popular ones is a beer trap.

Just like snail fences, snail collars are also available in metal and plastic and have corresponding properties. Their mode of action is also based on the same principle. A special feature of the slug collars is that they can also be converted into a mini greenhouse. Since they are quite small, a lid can be placed on the opening, protecting the plants from frost, drying or heavy rain. An upgrade is possible with close-meshed fruit and vegetable protective netting or fly screens, which also keep out other garden animals. While some snails tried to get to the marigolds – one of their favorite dishes – none of them succeeded.

The collars come with an optional extra of lids that can be used to create a mini greenhouse effect for germinating seeds. The small holes in the top of the lid allow you to water your crops without removing it, making it easy to keep your plants hydrated and healthy. Dr Hayley Jones, Entomologist and Lead Researcher for the RHS, advises rinsing and drying egg shells then crushing them into pieces around 1cm square in size. "You’ll need to top up the barrier once it starts to get washed away by rain or watering, or if animals take the pieces of shell away or dig them up," she adds. After the bottom is removed, you could defuse the new sharp edge with coarse sandpaper to finish the plant protector. With a beer trap, you set a container, usually a plastic tub of some kind, level with the surface of the soil. You want it level with the surface so slugs can easily get into it but you want the bottom to be deep, so they can’t get out. This is one of the largest slugs in British gardens, reaching up to 15cm in length and living up to 3 years. It is pale with distinct leopard-like spots. It also tends to mate above the ground, from a string of mucus. The best way to protect your million bells is to simply grow them on for longer in a protected space like a greenhouse before moving them outside. Ferric phosphate is now the only approved chemical slug control. Be aware, however, that it can still pose risks to children and pets if ingested.
