Tomintoul 10 year old single malt whisky was introduced to their core range in 2002. This happened two years after the distillery was bought by Angus Dundee. Tomintoul distillery can be found inside the beautiful Glenlivet estate, from the Speyside region. It’s been named after the highest village in the Highlands of Scotland, the nearby village of Tomintoul. The Tomintoul-Glenlivet Distillery produces whiskies which are famous for being gentle. That’s why you might know this distillery as The Gentle Dram. After tasting this 10 year old, and their 16 year old, I couldn’t agree more with their tag line. Both, the 10 and 16 year old single malts have been matured in American Oak Ex-Bourbon casks. Located on the northern edge of the Cairngorms National Park, Tomintoul is the highest village in Highlands. The palate is eve more limp, lifeless, light and watery than the nose. It barely tasted like anything, but what did register were notes of fruit, malt, a bit of cocoa and hay. Our Service is an online platform which provides Members with information (e.g. bottle facts, market-indices, market values and prices) on (mostly) whisky and allows Members to add information to the platform. We do not sell, nor does the Service provide any option to buy, any alcoholic products.

Tomintoul 10 is a flat, light and lifeless whisky and calling it “The Gentle Dram” is an understatement. It comes across like someone mixed a regular 40% whisky 40/60 with water. It’s easily one of the most boring whiskies I’ve ever had. It might sounds like I’m angry at this whisky, but I’ not. I’m disappointed.

It was the Duke of Gordon who commissioned the village, he planned and built it along a military road, it has wide roads, stone-built buildings, and two listed (historically protected) churches. Every third Saturday in July, the villagers (and guests) gather for a day of Scottish festivities. Dress appropriately – visitors are encouraged to join in the fun events.

Tomintoul is not only popular during the summer months but year-round. The Lecht Ski Centre attracts skiers and snowboarders while the ice-covered gorges attract winter climbers.Tomintoul is part of the large, Crown-owned Glenlivet Estate. The estate is responsibly managed and well maintained. They advocate the outdoors and a healthy lifestyle. They even have a dedicated mountain bike centre at Glenlivet Bike Trails. I’ve had some truly astounding Tomintoul, so I know the potential it has, but the Tomintoul 10 is unfortunately nowhere near that level. It doesn’t even hint at a possibility of that level and that’s… that’s really disappointing. You might’ve wondered already, but the whisky is chill-filtered, caramel-coloured and bottled at just 40%. Not exactly the stuff of dreams for the average whisky nerd. Then again, there’s a whole world of casual whisky drinkers out there for who Tomintoul is absolutely perfect. And to be totally honest, even at such a disadvantage Tomintoul’s single malt is rather pleasant. But you can just taste there’s potential for much more, also evidenced by a single cask release I reviewed last year. I’m not convinced Tomintoul will soon shift their approach and start catering to geeks, but if they ever decide to, I’m confident they’ll succeed.
