About this deal

I have been sitting here trying to come up with words exactly as to how this book made me feel. Then I concluded that no words will ever do justice to these emotions I have right now. Edit: I am so glad I am not reading this shit. This is the 5th book in this series. We need more than smut, fluff, and random dialogue. We need a PLOT. I also stream a variety of things over on Twitch with stream highlights and VODs posted on my YouTube Channel, and clips shared on my Clips YouTube Channel. I am SO flipping excited for this to end (but in a good way, I wanna see our Poppy girl become her full primal self)

A Soul of Ash and Blood is the fifth installment of the Blood and Ash series by Jennifer L. Armentrout. However, while it might be the fifth installment, this book is basically a retelling of From Blood and Ash from Cas’s POV. There are moments of the present sprinkled in, so it’s not completely just a retelling, but usually those chapters are fairly short and serve as a transition when something else in From Blood and Ash didn’t involve the two of them together. So, this isn’t going to be a long review by any means as I don’t have a lot of new things to talk about with this tale that I didn’t already discuss when I reviewed From Blood and Ash. This B&N Exclusive Edition includes a gorgeous alternative cover, unique end papers and special color case stamp. The entire kingdom’s future rests on Poppy’s shoulders, something she’s not even quite sure she wants for herself. Because a Maiden has a heart. And a soul. And longing. And when Hawke, a golden-eyed guard honor bound to ensure her Ascension, enters her life, destiny and duty become tangled with desire and need. He incites her anger, makes her question everything she believes in, and tempts her with the forbidden.

Damn, my little marshmallow's getting kinda crispy'' Delano being referred to as marshmallow made me happy. T he focus on sex in this book and it not being with the FMC just didn't sit right with me. I know it is crazy that I am saying this as I love smut but for this story that we have been following for 4 books so far, did we really need this? As I said, I saw Cas in a new light and I didn't like what I saw. Some of them are Cas just talking to or caring for Poppy, others are him reflecting on the past with Kieran and Delano, some are him talking with others about what’s happening in the present about things that recently happened, and one is an action scene that is a major set up for the next book. Mostly, it’s just reflections on how Cas viewed things in the past vs the present with a bit of character development. From the teasers and other posts that Jennifer released on her FB group about ASOAAB, it seemed like this book wasn't going to simply be a rehashing of events from Book 1, it would also deal with the trauma Casteel went through during his time as Isbeth's captive. Anyone who knows me knows that I was counting down the days for the release of this book from my favorite author!

In Jennifer L. Armentrout’s newest offering, Prince Casteel Da’Neer tells an unconscious Poppy the tale of their courtship. The reader does get dropped into the present every few chapters, rather jarringly at times, but the vast majority of the book is a retelling of From Blood and Ash, from Casteel’s point of view. A Soul of Ash and Blood is comparable to Twilight’s Midnight Sun by Stephanie Mayer. It's been a while since I've read the From Blood and Ash series, and I was worried that I'd be a little lost in this book if I didn't reread them first. But I decided to dive in and it was totally fine. It was actually a great recap of what happened in FBAA. I loved getting Cas's POV and learning what was going on in his head during his journey to win Poppy's trust. I wanted to be a good man who would walk away from what he knew he wasn’t worthy or deserving of. The kind Kieran believed I was. The type I had been raised to be. But I wasn’t a good man. I say spoilers, but are they really? Nothing new really happens that didn’t already take place in From Blood and Ash. But there are moments in the present that I’ll be discussing as well, so I figured I give the warning. Though I’m not going to go into too much detail regarding the final chapter. After the final battle at the end of A War of Two Queens, Poppy falls into a stasis and will remain in it until she completes the culling. Nektas remembers Nyktos’ consort going through the same thing and suggests that Cas talks to her while she is in stasis to make sure that she remembers who she is, and who Cas is, once she wakes up. Cas decides to take Nektas’ advice and tells Poppy about when he first met her and learned to know her. So this is mostly a retelling of From Blood and Ash but from Cas’ point of view. Casteel’s POV was my favorite so far. The fan favorite scenes like the Blood Forest and the Willow tree were amazing. However, in my opinion, the true bright part of this book was reading about Casteel and Kieran’s conversations and friendship before Poppy and Cas were truly together. Kieran and Casteel’s interactions were the best part. Their friendship is just so normal, relatable, and sweet, and their banter had me laughing out loud. There was also a spicy Kieran scene where Kieran is having sex with a descenter at the Red Pearl while Casteel is just casually in the same room having a conversation with him. Not sure if others are against that, but I personally loved it and thought it was hot because Kieran is my sweetie. I thought Kieran and Casteel's personalities both really shone in this book.
