The Topping is not just a headphone amplifier but it can also act as a preamplifier. It takes any compatible input and through the use of the volume control plus the front panel input selector plays the preamplifier part very well. Starting with the release of the THX 789 balanced amplifier a few years ago, many companies have decided to follow suit by releasing their version of an affordable balanced headphone amplifier. This has resulted in the release of THX-based amplifiers from SMSL, and some affordable chip-based amplifiers from Topping and Schiit Audio among others.

More to the center of the rear panel are a set of identical connectors, only their functions turn into outputs and as mentioned previously, both can be used simultaneously either in fixed mode or variable depending on the front panel preamplifier switch position. This pairing definitely spaced out the soundstage quite well. However, the drier and more textured nature of the midbass on the Ares II emphasized the more loose nature of the mid-bass presentation of the A30 Pro. In contrast, the more euphonic nature of the vocal presentation of the A30 Pro created an overall sweeter vocal presentation when paired with the Ares 2. The A30 Pro has a wide dynamic range ensuring it has an edge when playing classical recordings with gentler passages that offer a sense of control and crescendos that rush in with an air of confidence. I used the A90 with a variety of DACs from the smallest micro DAC to a Bluetooth DAC like the FIIO BTA30, and I also used an iFi NEO using the XLR connectivity and you could really tell what each DAC sounds like which is a very good character of this amplifier in particular. As mentioned before it makes an excellent test platform and yet still remains musical and involving. For the price, it’s practically unbeatable but the unit is utilitarian and feature-free, to say the least, and comes in a plain brown box.

The earbuds will only be charged when you correctly place them in the charging slots and close the lid. As previously mentioned the Topping A90 saw about 8 different sources while I was testing it out but only when I paired these two together is when I got the full picture. Of course, the question arises that is it fair to compare a 200 dollar unit to one that costs 500? Not really and unfortunately I do now own any of the THX models which are comparable in cost but the word around the net is that this one gives them a run especially in raw output power, hiss free operation with a smoother tonality free from sharp edgy sound characteristics. Let’s leave it there. The Topping A90 is a bargain when it comes to high-quality headphone amplification. Just three years ago similar performance would have cost closer to 3 grand and I’m sure this model will satisfy most music lovers and even some ardent audiophiles. The fact that it can also act as a preamplifier is a bonus.Recently though, Topping has talked to us about the release of their contender for a midrange solution that still utilizes their NFCA technology, while having options for balanced input and output ports.

The iFi Signature seemed more dynamic and warmer while the Topping A90 remained smoother especially in the mid and upper regions with a more effortless top volume level due to the extra power comparing both units using the 4.4mm output connection.At the rear of the device, there are 2 physical switches. The first one is a power switch that disconnects the amplifier from the mains power. I must have pulled all the stops when it came to feeding the Topping A90 by using every source I had and not once was I disappointed except for a few times when I realized how terrible the internal DAC was from the source.

Our Verdict The most obvious DAC pairing with the A30 Pro is its complementing DAC, the D30 Pro. With this pairing, I made sure to use a pair of balanced outputs, since the D30 Pro sounds optimal through its balanced outputs.
