Chambers Student Guide Law school - Chambers Student Guide

If you’re offered a training contract by a commercial firm which recruits two years in advance, it will usually pay your PGDL (where required) and SQE course and exam fees, plus a living allowance or maintenance grant. If you want to work for firms which pay future trainees’ law school fees, we recommend you apply for (and gain) a training contract before starting law school. Whilst some firms are following their traditional training contract route but now with the SQE instead of the LPC, law firms are also beginning to offer training programmes following more of a graduate-apprenticeship-style route, where the SQE is studied for and taken alongside working at the firm, so it’s always worth looking for those kinds of opportunities too, as they allow you to gain experience leading to qualification, whilst earning a salary and having your training paid for. A small number of other firms, mostly smaller outfits, have told us their vacation scheme or work experience programme is also open to first-years; they include Kingsley Napley, Wedlake Bell and Wilkin Chapman. Small, regional and high-street firms may offer work experience to first-years on an ad hoc basis. However, some may prefer candidates with more academic experience. You will spend time with different departments within our client service areas to get a true insight and a real feel for what it is like to be a trainee solicitor at Irwin Mitchell. Think carefully about which experiences will actually showcase your transferable skills the most. You may have been really chuffed by your three-day internship at Amnesty International, but if all you did was stuff envelopes, then your part-time job on the tills at Sainsbury's may actually better showcase your ability to work efficiently and provide good client service. “Show work experience and relevant skills, but make it relevant,” one recruiter advised. “Tell us why it will benefit the firm and why what you have learnt will make you a good lawyer.” When it came to salary, trainees did mention that they would “appreciate a salary review, because it is below some of our market competitors, and we’d like a few more conversations about why.” That being said, there certainly wasn’t much by way of hard feelings: “I’m never dreading going to work. Going to work doesn’t feel like a chore, and that surpasses considerations like salary.” Each practice group provides formal training: “ Whenever we rotate seats, we have month-long training.” Newbies did highlight “ some repetition from the LPC, but it’s always great to get that refresher before a seat begins.” For example, in MIT, “ we had weekly breakfast seminars; people come in from barristers’ chambers and firms.” Supervisors were also a source of support. Our interviewees were able to navigate teething problems by simply interacting with partners and senior associates: “ They’re happy to answer basic questions, like IT systems, which can be hard to get your head around!”By focusing on the markets and areas of expertise where we have extensive knowledge and experience, we achieve the best outcomes for our clients, who range from large organisations, entrepreneurial businesses and public sector bodies, to individuals, families and their global wealth. We are trusted to help them with everything from their everyday legal needs to their business critical issues and all points in between. We are committed to employing people with long-term health conditions, disabilities or impairments. We are a Disability Confident Employer, ensuring that we provide best practice in supporting out people and providing any adjustments or tools needed in the workplace. Monkey gifs aside, we wanted to know if there was any time for monkeying around? “It’s hard to meet up across the country, but when our cohort started, our induction was in the Birmingham office for three days and we all went out on one of the nights!” Given the size of the intake, “naturally some people are more social than others, and people have kids and other commitments,” so the firm’s social scene isn’t uber intense. But impromptu drinks after work, fully catered office parties and the annual Christmas party at the Hilton were all on the cards. In addition, practice groups also put on their own events. Interviewees told us that the corporate and finance groups “do the most events, like client dinners and gala balls.”
