About this deal

BEN: Really not much at all here. I love the shoe. If I had to stretch for something, I’d say that white isn’t my preferred color for a running shoe (the contrasting “goldenrod” yellow looks great – just pair it with something that doesn’t immediately look dirty). 🙂 What we’re about to say next may come as a surprise. But when we try to compare the Rebel V2’s ride character with other shoes, the Rebel V1 isn’t the first shoe that comes to mind. Price comparisons are based on the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price ("MSRP") or Original Selling Price. Actual sales may not have occurred at this price.

Dr. Matthew Klein is a 150 lb male with notable PRs of 14:45 for 5k and 2:32:44 for the full marathon. He typically runs 70-100 miles per week and trains at a variety of paces from 8min per mile recovery runs to 4:40 per mile 1k repeats. He prefers firmer and responsive shoes with snug heels and medium to wide toe boxes. The stability guy of the group, he also prefers a little stability in his footwear. However, as a researcher, clinician and running shoe aficionado, he will run in anything. IG handle @kleinrunsdpt The characteristic edge flare remains—though slightly muted—and ensures a visual resemblance to its predecessor. Beyond that, however, there are a number of tweaks: As a 1.65m, 57kg runner, I have to say of all the NB shoes I have run with in the past (890, Impulse v1, 1500), the Rebel v3 feels like the fast, light, fairly responsive and moderately cushioned shoe i like for 10-15km runs. On the forefoot, the rubber panel is different and it makes the ride firmer. There are no longer triangular cutouts in the rubber so the squishy foam can’t push through the holes when the forefoot is loaded. Our favorite plate-cushioned racer continues to the Saucony Endorphin Speed V2 because of the value it offers at the price. IS THE NEW BALANCE FUELCELL REBEL V2 DURABLE?

Cheng: Previous contributors have already discussed most of my views on the Rebel V2's upper. I'll point out one funny issue… The soft Fuelcell foam makes even relaxed runs a comfortable affair, and there’s no pressure to go fast. The laces also begin on the midfoot rather than the forefoot. Technically speaking, the first row of lacing is over the forefoot. But the asymmetrical slant means that the first row effectively begins on the midfoot. Jamie : FuelCell truly lives up to the hype in this shoe. After over 200 miles, it still feels as soft as when I took it out of the box. Running on roads, crushed limestone, and even some trails, this shoe can handle it all. It’s soft enough for those easy runs, springy for some uptempo runs, and overall just super light. I tend to have some issues when shoes are too soft, so the added responsiveness from the FuelCell is just perfect. For a non-plated shoe, the Rebel v2 has become one of my new favorites in my running shoe rotation. The super critical, nitrogen infused FuelCell provides really good energy return and makes it feel like a super foam. It’s not as bouncy as ZoomX but more bouncy than Hyper Burst, DNA Flash and Pwrrun PB.

Each one of our New Balance FuelCell running shoes in the range offers subtly distinct performance characteristics, allowing you to select a model that perfectly matches your running style and goals. For a comfortable, well-cushioned ride – look no further than the New Balance rebel v2 (FuelCell), up for training runs and intense runs alike. Every piece has its iterations. Adding to the collection came with careful consideration, if it wasn’t adding to the racing experience then it had no place. Step forward the FuelCell SC Elite v3, it complements the midsole’s super springy rebounds with the dynamic energy return and stability of our Energy Arc system and a full-length carbon plate. Every aspect of its design is developed to deliver PB-busting race day speed. Meanwhile, the New Balance FuelCell Propel v3 offers exceptional day-to-day performance courtesy of lightweight uppers. If you’re after a versatile all-purpose runner that’s allows you to experience the high-rebound performance of FuellCell technology, then this is the collection for you. Michael: Is this our biggest review ever and the one with the one testers? There’s a reason so many of our runner-testers want to put down words about the Rebel v2 - it’s simply awesome. Find out more! The New Balance FuelCell Rebel 2 is a highly versatile performance trainer. The shoe runs neutral throughout and provides a highly cushioned and responsive ride for how low profile and lightweight the shoe is. The Rebel 2 is an impressive trainer that can be looked at as a "do it all" Embracing the Adizero design, the Adidas shoe is a little bit different, while the others remain fairly typical, resembling most tempo shoes on the shelves. Consequently, if you usually find comfort in most speed training shoes, the Rebel v3 is a safe choice. Peter: Not too much to add, I had a lot of high expectations leading up to the arrival of the Rebel V2--and for once I wasn’t disappointed. Fit is true-to-size, upper is great looking and very comfortable, lacing took ZERO tweaking and the shoe is light AF. My only concern was that running in them would be a letdown.

I found that the Rebel v3 had quite a tight fit, which was the same for the first two versions of the shoe. I was OK in my normal size, but going half a size up would create a more comfortable fit, especially on longer runs. How I Tested This Shoe The Rebel v3 is also comfortable enough for most easy runs. The one exception for me was a recovery run the day after a particularly long run, when I found that it didn’t provide enough protection for tired legs – I’d rather be in a max-cushioned shoe like the New Balance More v4 to shuffle through those runs. When I tried it on in the store, my normal size felt a bit short. A half size up felt much better. The Rebel v3 is slightly shorter than most running shoes so most runners will need to size up.The fit is simply excellent—the TC and RC Elite also fit me very well so those who have tried those can be confident in the Rebel v2. It is perfectly true to size for my medium width foot and comfortable despite minimal padding. The shoe is very flexible on foot and the unstructured upper lets it bend easily. Underfoot it is soft and if I lean around on my foot I can feel it compressing where I’m weighting it. Jacob: My first impressions were of excitement and hype. The Rebel v2 is extremely lightweight, sleek, soft, and looks elegant and high quality. I have been testing the Adidas Adios Pro (top-end carbon-plated marathon racer) and the Rebel v2 is dramatically lighter. A weighing confirms it’s low weight, at only 244g in my US Men’s 12 it is only a few grams heavier than the high-end racing RC Elite and the lightest trainer I have tested. The heel-to-toe offset is 6 mm, New Balance’s favorite ‘drop’ for tempo trainers. It’s funny how certain offset numbers are associated with the brands. Saucony goes for 4 mm (Kinvara) and 8 mm (Ride, Guide, et.al), Hoka uses a 5 mm offset, and Altra is 0 mm, of course. Personal: A (Really lightweight, protective, bouncy, and responsive. This is a shoe I really like doing strides in, road workouts, long runs, etc.) So where do we see the Fuelcell Rebel V2 fit into a shoe rotation? Can this be the one shoe to do it all? It certainly has the potential, so its fragile build quality is disappointing.

THOMAS: I feel bad for the New Balance team, I know they are already working on the third version, maybe the fourth. I don’t know where they can go from here unless a new technology/foam comes out. This shoe is a banger. It is the best non-plated tempo/race shoe I have ever put on my feet. The FuelCell Rebel v2 is an amazing everyday running shoe that a lot of people should probably buy. It has a wide range of uses that will make it a great shoe for people of all skill levels and training types. Ultimately though, it's a shoe that can make the running experience fun. And sometimes knowing there will be little fun to be had is the thing that can motivate you to get out for a run. For that reason, these are my favorite running shoes I've tried over the last 12 months. The midfoot and rearfoot are narrow compared to the forefoot. The outsole rubber placement also makes the shoe more suited to forefoot striking. As you can see, the damage from our standardized Dremel test is pretty evident, although not as scary as with other shoes.

The FuelCell TC is also a better tempo trainer than the Rebel. The Rebel v2 now falls into the daily training category. That said, these shoes need to be worn on road and in relatively good weather conditions to get the most out of them. The 6mm drop and the decent cushioning make them suitable for longer runs as well as for faster workouts. But keep in mind that the outsole’s durability is questionable and that there isn’t a great grip for wet surfaces. Sally: New Balance is on to something with this midsole, something good! I am totally in agreement with the others here: this is an outstanding non-plated shoe that can perform in any kind of condition and at any pace.
