About this deal

As you would perhaps only expect from a Woo Hollywood production, this is a really vibrant film, and the colour enhancements here only make it even more eye-burningly spectacular, bringing added depth to almost every single tone, and making the palette positively pop. It's a fantastic upgrade, the best the film has ever looked, and one of the best of the excellent 4K renditions of the Mission: Impossible films. Fans, exhale. Paramount has finally taken the opportunity of the film's UHD release to offer an image that is not just a massive This new print of MI:1 has sharpness, color depth, contrast, and audio intricacies that were weren’t available on previous disc editions. There are details in almost every scene that make watching the film a brand new experience. Dialogue comes across clearly and coherently throughout, largely dominating the centre channels with some expansion over to the fronts where for directionality. The score is one of the best of the entire series, blending just enough classic thematic elements in with the modern beats, and providing a rousing accompaniment that gives the channels plenty to play with almost throughout the movie.

The 4k Blu-rays will hit stores not all at once, but in pairs, starting on June 27 with Mission: Impossible and Mission: Impossible 2. Despite the effective technical downgrade from Ghost Protocol's striking, perfect, full fat, IMAX-enhanced 4K presentation to a semi-skimmed 2K upscale, Rogue Nation is still a simmering, stunning-looking 2015 production. Mission: Impossible 4K Blu-ray delivers stunning video and great audio in this excellent Blu-ray releaseThere's also a sense of genuine consequence, courtesy of investment in the characters, with McQuarrie cleverly building upon the existing foundation from the last few movies and eliciting hitherto an underdeveloped personal angle which makes the tension at times unbearable. It's a bold move; Marvel are the benchmark for this kind of thing, whilst DC are not, and even the unlikely Fast & Furious franchise has rebuilt itself using this technique, but it's something refreshing to see so effectively handled in Mission: Impossible, particularly when the Craig Bond sequels were quite terrible at it ( Quantum of Solace and Spectre in particular), with Fallout seamlessly expanding the scope of Rogue Nation, furthering the character arcs and delivering a continuation to a story which feels both organic and utterly gripping. Fallout doesn’t merely bound from one spectacular - and spectacularly tense - set piece to the next, instead fluidly injecting a plentiful bevy of them into the complex narrative of this stunning direct sequel to Rogue Nation, delivering two and a half hours of nail-biting tension and jaw-dropping thrills, which leaves you utterly exhausted by the end of it. If you haven’t watched Mission: Impossible in a while it’s a great time to get refreshed before the premiere of MI:6 ‘Fallout’ hitting theaters on June 27th. And, why not watch it in spectacular 4k? Not just the highlight of this Mission: Impossible set, but one of the best looking discs released this year.

Ever the trooper, it's Ghost Protocol that arguably cemented the franchise's - and the star's - name with regards to grand stunts, something which the early Bond films used to be celebrated for, but which Tom Cruise's Mission: Impossible is now synonymous with. The 2000 second film was shot on 35 mm film with VFX finished at 2K, although the film has been rescanned and mastered in 4K, which has been used here for this Ultra HD Blu-ray release.

image soars. Intimate skin details, clothes, environments, everything is ultra-sharp and finely revealing. Basic superlatives don't really do it justice; Overall, the video resolution is a huge, night-and-day improvement over the 1080p Blu-ray version which pales in comparison to this new print. There are some shots that could have been clearer, for example Jon Voight in the opening airplane scene isn’t the sharpest image you’ll see, but given the low lighting and mushy focus in the original film there’s not much that can be done to fix certain shots.

I already owned Mission: Impossible in HDX (1080p) on Vudu but I figured I would try to upgrade MI:1 to Digital 4K (UHD) on iTunes. Unfortunately, the iTunes code does not provide a Digital 4k version, even though Apple supports 4k HDR with Dolby Vision as provided on the disc. [ Update: Upon release date of the 4k Blu-ray the digital code now redeems to Digital 4k with Dolby Vision. Woohoo!]
