The Beetons decided to revamp The Englishwoman's Domestic Magazine, particularly the fashion column, which the historian Graham Nown describes as "a rather drab piece". Isabella brought an efficiency and strong business acumen to Samuel's normally disorganised and financially wasteful approach.
