About this deal

Vidal and Norman Mailer first met at a mutual friend’s Manhattan apartment in 1952. Mailer had made a huge splash with The Naked and the Dead, his bestselling novel of the Pacific war, frustrating Vidal, whose own war novel, Williwaw, had barely registered. The two young writers circled each other warily, and a complicated friendship began that would play out over the next five decades. The two had little in common. “Norman imagined himself by nature a kind of boxer – though he wasn’t, not really,” says Gay Talese, a friend to both men. “In reality, Norman was soft. But he put on this aggressive mask. Vidal had another kind of mask: cool, suave, worldly-wise. It was a good contrast with Norman. They played well together, but it was always a kind of act. They both understood the publicity value of this contest, and they let it play out in different ways.” Scott, A. O. (20 July 2007). "Norman Mailer, Unbound and on Film: Revisiting His Bigger-Than-Life Selves". The New York Times . Retrieved 2007-08-03. Vidal said, “I never actually disliked Norman, not really. So now the feud – for what it was worth – was officially over. This was fine with me, as long as I didn’t have to read another of his books.” The pair would do several fundraising events in their last decade, and the truce held.

Wenke, Joseph (2014) [1987]. Mailer's America. Hanover, NH; London: University Press of New England for University of Connecticut. ISBN 978-0874513936. What Mailer is trying to capture is the magic that surrounds a big fight: the rituals, the superstitions, the whole game. We still see it today with the UFC. It’s the story which gets built around the fighters and their entourage and the varied characters which the fight attracts. The question then becomes: why do we need to create a narrative? Why can’t the actual fight speak for itself? Maybe because many times it doesn’t. But this time, as everyone knows, it did.Bloom, Harold, ed. (1986). Norman Mailer. Modern Critical Views. He did not just hit hard, he hit in such a way that the nucleus of his opponent’s will was reached. Fission began. Consciousness exploded. The head smote the spine with a lightning bolt and the legs came apart like falling walls.’ Whalen-Bridge, John (2010). Norman Mailer's Later Fictions: Ancient Evenings Through Castle in the Forest . Gore Vidal gripped a nation | Biography A life in feuds: how Gore Vidal gripped a nation | Biography

On 2 October, 2010, not long after Hitchens was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer, I spoke to him at a book festival in Pennsylvania. He was already fragile. We sat together in his hotel room and talked, and he asked me as I left if Vidal had spoken about him recently. I could not tell him the truth. “He wasn’t happy with your piece about him in Vanity Fair,” I said, “but he still thinks of you fondly.” Hitchens smiled, saying: “I looked to him as a model. We all did.” Sex, looks and lawsuits - Gore Vidal in quotes Today it seems unlikely, but in 1974 two sporting greats travelled from the United States to Africa, to battle it out in Kinshasa (then in Zaire, but today in the Democratic Republic of the Congo.) Challenger Muhammad Ali was to fight George Foreman, an unbeaten fighter, and apparently unbeatable. Before it even happened, the Rumble in the Jungle was hyped as the biggest fight of the decade. It might now be the greatest sporting event of the twentieth century. More than 10,000 demonstrators belonging to various student movements converged, despite the refusal of the mayor, Richard Daley, to allow permits. As Vidal saw it, this abrogated the “right to assembly” as put forward in the constitution. On 28 August, the day of the seventh debate, there had been a “police riot”, as it was described in the subsequent Walker Report. A young protester had lowered the American flag in Grant Park, and the police swarmed. Tear gas filled the air, and clubs swung. The nation watched in horror, as the United States appeared to slip into anarchy.

On two other fighters, "As boxers, Ellis and Liston had such different moves one could not pass a bowl of soup to the other without spilling it." The book has an amazing cast of larger than life characters - Mohammed Ali, George Foreman, Hunter S Thompson, George Plimpton, Mobutu and Don King. The thing about Norman Mailer, in my opinion, is that he sometimes thinks that he is to writing as what Muhammad Ali is to boxing and that he can do no wrong. By being the greatest writer of all time he makes reading a simple thing like a book about a very famous boxing match a more difficult read than it needs to be.
