Goh grew up in Vermilion City in the Kanto region with his parents, Camille and Walker, and grandmother, Halta. Sometime later, Goh met Chloe and became his only friend growing up. Get ready for laughter as your friends and family suddenly start sounding like they were born in a barn! Three years prior, during a family trip to Azalea Town, Goh befriended Horace, who was looking for the Mythical Pokémon Celebi. Goh offered to help with the search, but as night closed in, the boys promised to meet up again the next day. However, Horace didn't show up, leading Goh to feel betrayed. In addition, as of All Out, All of the Time!, Goh has owned more individual Pokémon species than any other main character, including Ash.

In Sword and Shield: Slumbering Weald!, Goh and Ash were sent to Galar to investigate various incidents where Pokémon suddenly began Dynamaxing at random. Their attempts to catch and battle the two Legendary Pokémon ended in failure as they were merely illusions. In the following episode, Sonia took Goh to visit her grandmother Professor Magnolia to learn more about Dynamax. Goh later received a Dynamax Band from Sonia, which was fashioned from a Wishing Star they found outside. The next day, at the Stow-on-Side mural, Goh and Sonia were approached by Oleana's subordinate, who aimed to stop the duo's research. Goh Dynamaxed Raboot to battle Oleana's subordinate's Gigantamax Garbodor, but the clash broke the mural, revealing a statue of Zacian and Zamazenta underneath. In Just a Scone's Throw From Here!, Goh received urgent summons from Project Mew and was forced to part ways with Ash just before the Masters Eight Tournament finals. Traveling to Hoenn, he reunited with the research team in A Flood of Torrential Gains! at Slateport City, from where they departed to Faraway Island. Through many difficulties, the Chasers managed to find Mew, with Goh getting a chance to express his gratitude for it having served as a motivation for him ever since their first encounter. Mew even briefly appeared on Goh's palm before the research team was forced to leave the island due to worsening weather conditions. Professor Amaranth announced that Project Mew was now temporarily disbanded, though he did offer Goh, Horace, and Gary a chance to return as Chasers for the next expedition. As seen in Enter Pikachu!, when he was six, Goh was invited by Chloe to go to Professor Oak's Pokémon Summer Camp with her. During their visit to Pallet Town, Goh and Chloe encountered the Mythical Pokémon Mew. The two chased after the unknown Pokémon, but it eventually got away in the aftermath of a baby Kangaskhan rescue. Professor Oak later told them the Pokémon they saw was most likely Mew. Motivated, Goh swore that he would become a Pokémon Trainer when he turned ten, and one day catch Mew. Kingdra has not been seen since its debut episode, making it unclear whether Goh kept it following the Trial Mission.Cyndaquil was caught by Goh during the Sinnoh Festival in Canalave City to demonstrate ancient Sinnohan Poké Balls. It was released afterwards. Goh's catching style is mainly based on the gameplay mechanics of Pokémon GO and Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!, all of which feature catching wild Pokémon without having to battle them. He later returned in time to watch the final match between Ash and Hodge, which ended in Ash's victory. As they returned home, Goh apologized to Ash for his earlier outburst, having come to see battling in a new light through his observation of the final match. In Just a Scone's Throw From Here!, Eternatus was revealed to have been unsealed, with Professor Magnolia, Sonia, and Leon hoping to achieve coexistence between it and the people of Galar. As such, Goh decided to entrust Eternatus to Leon, who accepted the offer. Ever since the events in Ivysaur's Mysterious Tower!, Goh seems to strongly admire Ash for his determination, passion, and compassion for Pokémon, especially the extraordinary bond he shares with his Pikachu. Goh has occasionally taken inspiration from Ash, with the bond between Ash and Pikachu inspiring Goh to catch his own in Gotta Catch a What?!, as well as deciding to catch an Altaria in Reuniting for the First Time! after watching Ash battle against one in the previous episode.From Pokémon GO and/or Pokémon: Let's Go, Pikachu! and Let's Go, Eevee!; possibly named after Gō Ichinose Kingdra was targeted by Goh for his second Project Mew Trial Mission. After locating it in an underwater cave off the coast of Slateport City, he battled against it and managed to catch it. When Ash and Goh's air supply started to run out, Goh had Kingdra propel them to the surface.
