About this deal

Talking at Night is a masterful and authentic depiction of true love in all its messy, complicated and gut-wrenching glory. Will and Rosie are the perfect, imperfect star-crossed lovers - their story had me enthralled from the start." - Ruth Hogan Despite their different life goals and Rosie’s insistence that they just stay friends, their feelings intensify until a single night breaks them both and changes the entire course of both their lives. Over the many years that follow, circumstances, guilt and each one’s almost paralyzing inability to make choices for their own happiness, push them together and pull them apart repeatedly. Locations, jobs and partners change, but one thing is constant: their friendship. They fight, they laugh, they ignore each other, they seek each other out, but no matter what - they stay. Is that enough or are they both chasing a youthful fantasy? I have really taken my time with this review.. because I don’t think anything I say or suggest will do this book any justice.

Compelling and propulsive, Talking at Night is an achingly beautiful novel about the people in our lives who change us irrevocably and who we will always carry with us, no matter what. Claire Daverley writes with elegance and grace as she mines the depths of human emotions. This novel will consume you.' Jill Santopolo, the New York Times bestselling author of The Light We Lost British author Daverley follows a young man and woman through decades of their lives as they experience love, tragedy, and heartache. All in all, this was a great read, and I’m excited to see what the author has in store next. Bonus point for making me feel like I couldn’t put this book down. I haven't felt this feeling for months!Along the way, we meet a cast of keenly observed characters, from Will’s loving grandma, who acts as a surrogate mother after his own deserts him, to Rosie’s emotionally icy mother, who makes it clear she has high expectations for her only daughter. And finally, what advice would you give to anyone thinking of entering the Caledonia Novel Award 2024? This is the perfect love story for the summer. It feels like a light breeze right after dinner. The atmosphere that surrounds the two young people falling for each other, growing distant, and learning what love is really about is Daverley’s greatest strength. She crafted the perfect vibe for these characters to inhabit.’ Debutiful

Deeply romantic . . . Reminded me of just how all-consuming and transformative first love can be. The more I read, the more I was completely immersed in the story of Rosie and Will and how life, and tragedy, conspire to keep them apart." - Laura BarnettRosie and Wills love story isn't straight forward it's intense, raw, flawed yet you know when you see two people and you just know they are meant to be together these are those two people. We really get to know the characters through the timeline from when they were teenagers to then adults and this definitely helped with building a connection. Talking At Night is a beautiful and tender love story, but it also a book about love. The small moments, the sweeping ones, and the swells. The early days, of youth and innocence. And the second and third chances that come after the passing of time, with new perspective and wisdom. It is also about the love between friends and siblings, and the different family dynamics that exist in different homes. And it is about the things we love, the things that anchor us, and all of the small things that make us who we are.
