About this deal

Doddie Weir OBE was one of rugby’s most recognisable personalities. He earned 61 caps for Scotland during a successful playing career, represented the British and Irish Lions on their successful tour to South Africa in 1997, and won championships with his two club sides, Melrose and Newcastle Falcons. BBC Two has commissioned a documentary from BBC Breakfast which follows Kevin Sinfield OBE on his incredible journey to support former teammate Rob Burrow. He speaks exclusively on his future fundraising efforts and his new job. Richard Frediani, Editor, BBC Breakfast, says: “Kevin’s determination to help his friend was obvious from the day he set off on his first challenge, and it was a huge honour for the BBC Breakfast team to be able to follow him closely on his journey. This documentary highlights how far Kevin has pushed himself to help not only his friends but the thousands of others affected by the disease, it also shows how the last three years have changed him as a person too. We’ve followed him so much he feels like part of the family, and we’re happy to be able to show another side to this extraordinary human being.” Rob's friends and family and so many other thousands of rugby league fans and the general public have raised a huge total to help continue the important work of the MND Association. Rob's wife Lindsey completed the Three Peaks Challenge and Rob's friend and former captain, Kevin Sinfield, has taken on three incredible challenges to raise money for motor neurone disease. The MND Association focuses on improving access to care, research and campaigning for those people living with or affected by MND in England, Wales and Northern Ireland.

He helped me a bit. I was explaining to him about rugby union: it's always a contest for the ball, you can lose the ball at any time. He really is the best of men. A humble account of the one of the most down to earth sportsmen of our generation. His honesty immediately helps you feel like you can relate to his journey. And his stories of friendship, especially to Rob Burrows, are inspiring. Speaking to BBC Radio Leeds last week, Sinfield said he hoped the experience would be "horrible and unpleasant". Sinfield is being accompanied along his route by a physiotherapist The team sits down with Kevin ahead of his busy schedule, for an exclusive first interview on what his future looks like and if he will continue his fund raising efforts for MND.Of his off-field exploits, and the three great challenges he has taken on so far, Sinfield says: "Most great books and films are a trilogy. There's a World Cup at the end of the year and my focus needs to be on that and the team. A one-club legend of Leeds Rhinos, who has now crossed codes as a defence coach for the England national rugby union team, Kevin Sinfield is a rugby icon. But in recent years has shown heroism of a very different kind through his selfless and extraordinary fundraising for motor neurone disease (MND), the terminal illness that has affected his best mate and former teammate Rob Burrow. Sinfield’s epic challenges have included running 7 ultra marathons in 7 days, and running over 101 miles in 24 hours.

If you want inspiring, uplifting and empowering... give this amazing man some of your time' Jake Humphrey As far as autobiographies go I've read better but this was still entertaining and interesting. I felt the flow of the book ebbed away towards the end - which is in no way a reflection of the man himself, just the way this was written and presented. There were some stories which scratched a surface and didn't delve much deeper which I would have liked but there was a lot to cram in I guess. But his career on the pitch is only part of the story. Alongside Sinfield was a small but indomitable scrum-half, Rob Burrow. As Rob's health has tragically declined in recent years due to Motor neurone disease (MND), Sinfield has set himself a series of extraordinary endurance challenges, including running seven ultra marathons in seven days and over 100 miles in a single day, that have raised awareness and millions of pounds for the cause of MND. In the process, Sinfield has won the hearts of a nation and an OBE from the Queen. In 2019, Burrow, who is now 40, was diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease. Sinfield sprung into action. The route will end at the Headingley home of rugby league club Leeds Rhinos, where he played for 18 years. I'm alright. I've been buoyed by the support, it's been incredible and the money we're raising is fantastic. I've not really gone into that dark zone yet, I think that's still to come, and I'm looking forward to the battle ahead," he told BBC Radio Nottingham. I’m proud to be supporting five charities with this challenge, charities which support people affected by MND and invest in research taking us closer to effective treatments and a cure for the disease. My Name’5 Doddie Foundation funds research into the causes of MND and potential treatments while also supporting families affected by MND.
