About this deal

The improved mood aspect of exercise is vital. Dr. Fung talks about the importance of getting a good night’s sleep and how even one night of sleep deprivation causes havoc with the two most important aspects of weight loss: insulin and cortisol. I’m not a great sleeper and envy people who can manage eight decent hours of sleep. Exercise does help me in that regard. This idea has at least three problems that render it ineffective. One, exercise makes us hungry. The body sensibly responds to an increase in energy expenditure by increasing out appetite so that we make up for calories burned.

The only way I can see IF working is if you’re already in a ketogenic state (ie burning fat for fuel by default instead of carbs), and fasting then allows you to focus on your body fat as a source of energy, rather than stored glycogen. All diets work in the short term. But we’ve been ignored the longterm problem of insulin resistance. There is one more piece of the puzzle--a solution found centuries ago. A practice that has been enshrined in the nutritional lore of virtually every population on earth... He reveals that overproduction of insulin in the body is the root cause of obesity and obesity-related illnesses including type 2 diabetes, and offers robust scientific evidence that reversing insulin resistance is the only way to lose weight in the long term.I highly recommend this book and highly recommend you read through all the facts and figures he goes over...it makes managing your weight and your diabetes much easier over your lifetime without much thought once you know how your body reacts to food.

Losing weight shouldn’t have to be so hard. If you’re looking for effective diet support, you should choose a program with clinically-researched methods. Desserts – these are generally high in sugar and should be avoided. Replace with seasonal fruits (optionally with whipped cream) or dark chocolate. Save less healthy desserts for special occasions, but don’t make them a regular occurrence. Frequently, the lifestyle of an overweight or obese person revolves around late suppers and bedtime. Dr. Fung will take you on a fascinating journey of how your body reacts to not only food but sleep as well.

It's a shame Fung went out on a limb like that, because he does explain things clearly. As it stands, I would have to say the following books on the same topic are better overall depending on the audience.
