Full Book Review: The One About A Boarding School Murder: This Book Kills by Ravena Guron | Book Review

And then Jess receives an anonymous text thanking her for the inspiration… With her scholarship on the line Jess must now uncover the identity of the murderer before she becomes their next victim. The story is laced with twist and turns and touches on life as a scholarship student who is under the strict instructions to not get in to any trouble, contrasted with the life of those with money who can try to make anything go away with it. Will they this time?Book Genre: Boarding School, Contemporary, Fiction, Mystery, Mystery Thriller, School Stories, Thriller, Young Adult, Young Adult Contemporary Armistice Day: A Collection of Remembrance - Spark Interest and Educate Children about Historical Moments

This was a very entertaining and well paced murder mystery. Like Agatha Christie for young adult readers.

The lovebirds’ happiness is short-lived however as Hugh is found murdered on the school grounds. The rumour mill erupts with theories as to who could have killed one of the most popular pupils in the school. First of all, can we appreciate how gripping the synopsis is. It's been a longgg while since I was ever interested in a YA (Young Adult) mystery book. I mostly read thrillers and mystery novels that deal with more adult themes, so the fact that I was instantly captivated by the synopsis of this YA mystery book was definitely a welcomed surprise. I love the idea that our protagonist is unknowingly involved in the murder mystery because it sets the character up to different conflicts– for example, being an unreliable narrator. I also enjoyed the fact that opening of the story is being told through Jess' journal– it's written in first person as she is recalling the events that took place in a journal to the reader. Our eyes into solving the mystery are through Jess' point of view.

I appreciated that even though we have some teenage angst and drama, the main focus was always trying to solve the murder. I'll make it clear from the start: I did not kill Hugh Henry Van Boren. I didn't even help. Well, not intentionally." When Hugh Henry Van Boren, one of the most popular and richest kids in Jess Choudhary's school, is found dead, the student body is left reeling and wondering who the murderer could be... Jess, a student under strict instructions to keep her record clean or risk losing her scholarship, finds herself at the centre of the investigation when it's revealed that Hugh died in the exact same way as a character in a short story she wrote. And then Jess receives an anonymous text thanking her for the inspiration. With time running out, Jess knows if she doesn't solve this mystery, she'll finally have something in common with Hugh Henry. She'll be dead too.I also enjoyed the setting, as I said I love mysteries set at boarding schools, and this one wasn’t different. There is something about the isolated setting and the fact that the main character/teen sleuth must know or at least know of the murderer that always gets me.

I wouldn’t say this is the deadliest thriller of 2023, but it’s for sure the most intriguing YA thriller I have read so far. It kept me on the edge of my seat; the clues, the drama, the plot twists just kept coming. I ended up predicting the culprit, but I don’t think it was very predictable. I loved the fact that the book stops at a certain point and tells you to make a prediction, because a reveal is about to happen. As soon as I got the reveal, I was beyond happy that I guessed it right. This interaction with the book made me completely forget whether my prediction was predictable or not. I didn’t even help. Well, not intentionally.”When Hugh Henry Van Boren, one of the most popular and richest kids in Jess Choudhary’s school, is found dead, the student body is left reeling and wondering who the murderer could be… Jess, a student under strict instructions to keep her record clean or risk losing her scholarship, finds herself at the centre of the investigation when it’s revealed that Hugh died in the exact same way as a character in a short story she wrote. It's a murder plot in a school, done before maybe, but this YA was hugely enjoyable, with a two-timing murder victim, a secret society, love interests, detectives and police involvement, and a scholarship student caught up in a fight for her education.I mean, there's a character called Clementine-Tangerine, because her parents own a fruit company. This isn't a dour, serious book at all! The mystery was phenomenally well done with twists, turns, scandals and secrets literally everywhere (along with several well placed red herrings) that I found myself (fuelled by paranoia and an incredibly late night of reading) suspecting literally everyone. Parents, teachers, the headmistress—EVERYONE!
