About this deal

For surround sound and center channel home theater speakers, you shouldn’t spend a lot because their power needs are usually fairly low. Copper-clad aluminum (CCA) wire has, in the last few years, become more and more common as the price of copper has gone up. It’s one of those “little things” you might not know when buying that companies aren’t telling you. Tear 2 short pieces of electrical tape. Starting at the insulation and at an angle, tightly wrap the tape until it is fully covered. You can also use heat shrink tubing for an even cleaner result. Long (100ft+) speaker runs or higher power applications such as high-power 2 or 4 ohm subwoofers with a short length. Longer speaker runs for car & home stereo speakers or short runs under 20 ft for 75-100W. Moderate power subwoofers (under 225W) with short lengths.

Gauge vs. 14 Gauge Speaker Wire: Which is Better? 16 Gauge vs. 14 Gauge Speaker Wire: Which is Better?

The current flows through two conductor sides (positive & negative) for a total of: 2*4m*0.0147Ω/m = 8m*0.0147Ω/m = 0.1176Ω total resistance for 4m of 19/29 stranded wire. You may have heard of the skin effect in some conductors which becomes more of an issue at higher frequencies but that’s well above the 20 to 20kHz audio range so it’s not something to worry about. Stranded speaker wire design The chart is absolutely wrong and misleading, 4mt copper cable for a 300W rms power suggests me a 16 awg cable, what a joke! Reply Place the connector into the crimp tool in the appropriate position in the tool, near the end of the connector. Buying & using speaker cable is definitely one of those cases where the old advice “better to have too much than not enough” applies! You don’t want to run out because you didn’t plan ahead.

What doesn’t matter for cable quality?

The best speaker wires come in various gauges; as the AWG (American Wire Gauge) number decreases, the size of the wire increases. For example, a 12 AWG wire is bigger than an 18 AWG wire. These numbers come into play when building out the wire runs for a system. Note: I do not recommend using wire nut connectors to join wire together as they aren’t nearly as reliable. They’re best suited for home electrical wiring. 2. Connecting speaker wire together by soldering There are some great tools that are very affordable that will cut wire very well and make extending speaker wire much easier: Certain types of wire (especially smaller gauges like 20AWG, 24AWG, etc can be harder to strip without breaking. For your first few times, practice on some surplus wire that won’t hurt your speaker wire length needs.

I do that sometimes for wire terminal strips because they can also be a pain to keep wire in place when tightening it down. A bonus of doing it that way is that it won’t oxidize like normal exposed speaker wire conductors do over timne. I'm a car audio fanatic and professional electrical engineer. During college I was a professional installer and even had a side business doing it. I still love speakers, home & car audio, and all kinds of projects related to enjoying the sound we love. With this type, the internal wire barrel (connector) can be too big for commonly used wire sizes like 18AWG.For longer lengths (50-100ft)/(15-30.5m) you’ll need to go up 2 gauges (14 ga.) to avoid losing power. Very long lengths of speaker wire lose a bit of power over the long distance due to resistance. Using larger wire can help reduce or avoid this. (Use my speaker wire calculator to make it easy) I recommend and use wire cutting pliers as they’re capable of cutting a wide range of wire sizes. For typical speaker cable or wire such as 18 gauge, the wire cutting feature on many hand tools works fine. Speaker wire cutting tips

There are only a few steps needed: cutting the wire (if needed), stripping the wire, and attaching & crimping the connectors. A. How to cut speaker wire All speaker wire sold is stranded, meaning it’s made up of a bundle of 16-60 or more very fine copper conductors. Solid wire, however, has only one conductor. In terms of audio, it’s fine and the sound quality is the same. Unlike pure copper wire, copper-clad aluminum uses an aluminum wire core with a thin copper plating. From the outside, it misleadingly looks the same because of the plating.

Strip the speaker wire to about 3/8″ to 1/2″ length bare wire. Twist the wire tightly by hand to keep the wire strands together. Scissors aren’t a good choice and the wire can even get jammed inside. B. How to strip speaker wire If you rarely use your amp or stereo output above 50%-60% power, you can go down one wire AWG gauge. This is because you’ll never reach the wire’s current capacity if you don’t use maximum power. A tape measure works well and so does string or rope you can place along the path where the wire will go.

14 vs 16 Gauge Speaker Wire- Is There Any Difference? 14 vs 16 Gauge Speaker Wire- Is There Any Difference?

A higher speaker impedance value (ex.: 6 or 8 ohm speakers) draws less current (lower amps) than lower impedance speakers. Therefore you often can use a thinner wire for them as you’ll see. It is true, however, that real copper wire is better than copper coated aluminum wire as I explain later. What gauge is speaker wire? (Wire size and wire gauge explained) To cut wire, just insert the wire and slightly close the tool until the wire is securely held in place & can’t move. Then squeeze very firmly. The wire should “snap” lightly and will be cut. Side hole type] Fold the wire under the insulation. [Center hole type] Twist the wire tightly and thread the wire through the screw’s center hole. Aluminum offers a lighter weight and lower cost than copper, so at first it may seem like a great way to replace the more expensive copper options. However, there’s a problem.

Should you buy expensive audiophile cables?

Set screw type: these have a set screw that is loosened to allow inserting the speaker wire and then tightened to hold it in place inside a metal barrel.
