Canon cameras display error codes when something is not working quite right. Error 01 is a lens body communication problem while an Error 05 relates to the flash system not functioning correctly. Canon's system is obviously limited by which lenses you choose, but it does offer the slight advantage of showing the stabilising effect through the viewfinder. Canon and Nikon also claim that a lens-based anti-shake system is inherently better too, but the jury's out on that one. My review of the EOS 450D was delayed by a malfunctioning EFS 18-55mm lens which refused to auto-focus properly, despite the camera claiming otherwise. Thankfully the second one actually worked, and the image stabilisation is undoubtedly a real boon for low-light photography. The EOS 450D doesn’t compete with other manufacturers’ entry-level models on price, so it has to beat them on image quality and performance. Therefore it makes little sense to me to hamstring what is a very good camera by pairing it with a substandard lens. Doing so still doesn’t make the 450D cheaper than the Nikon D60, and compromises its one real advantage over its competitors. Still, I’m sure Canon knows what it’s doing far better than I do. The main changes are two million more pixels, a new, easier-to-handle chassis and Live View, which shows what the camera is 'seeing' on the rear LCD.

In continuous mode it can rattle off 3.5 shots per second, which while not quite at the level of the EOS 1D MkIII is still pretty respectable, beating the Sony A350, Nikon D80 and Pentax K200D, and equalling the Olympus E-420.
