About this deal

People say that there’s no such thing as a perfect camera and, perhaps, the 35mm point and shoot is the most imperfect of all. There are trade-offs to be made in so many areas: focal length, max aperture, shutter speed (max or min), size, ergonomics, features. I bet there is no camera that doesn’t disappoint in some or all of these areas. Nevertheless, some promise to approach the ideal, and this is what makes the search so alluring. I trusted our friendly waitress with my camera to preserve the moment we got our peanut butter chocolate, candy cane, coffee, cinnamon bun and sugar-free chocolate ice cream sundaes. Finally, my last-week-of-the-decade roll of film was appropriately bookended with a photo of my family gathering to watch the Time’s Square ball drop on TV.

So why is it then that the Canon Sure Shot Supreme isn’t commanding mega money? It has that sharp 35mm wide aperture lens. It’s quite nice to use. It’s tough. I haven’t heard any reliability horror stories. Well, I don’t really know. Maybe I’ve just discovered something the rest of the world hasn’t latched on to yet. Or maybe it’s that there are hundreds of the things out there flooding the market. To be honest, I don’t really care. I spent very little money on it. If I drop it and kill it it’s not the end of the world. If I’m ahead of the curve the value will only go up. Either way, I have a simple to use and reliable performer I really quite like that should serve me well while riding on the continent. That, I think is a win / win situation.a b Canon Inc. "AF35M". Keep in mind that anyone can view public collections - they may also appear in recommendations and other places. The lens was of 38mm focal length and with a maximum aperture of f/2.8. A ring around the lens optic itself was used to set the film speed (ISO 25 to 400), which was indicated on a small window on the front of the lens assembly; also there, but below the lens optic itself, was the cadmium sulfide (CdS) photoresistor for the light meter. The location of this, inside the filter ring of the lens, meant that the meter would function accurately even with filters fitted to the lens. a-Si cell for full-auto program EE. Metering range of EV 3 – 17. Film speed range: ISO 25 – 3200 (with DX code).

The names seem interchangeable and can be confusing, but they’re really immaterial. Underneath, the cameras are all the same. The camera sets your shutter speed and exposure via the light meter on the front, so making sure the flash doesn’t fire is really the only thing to keep an eye on when shooting. This is partly because I find talking about minutiae like sharpness in the corners or whatever really boring and also beside the point when you’ve bought something like this. What are you expecting for a basic 1990s Canon point and shoot film camera? Every time I shoot a camera as simple as the Canon Sure Shot EX it makes me happy. I have to get over that initial mental hump that I’ve made for myself that when I got out taking photos I don’t want to “waste” the opportunity with “low quality” results, but as soon as I get over that, I find myself having a lot of fun. Shot using macro mode. Standard minimum focus distance at starting focal length. Middle of the zoom range. The camera successfully focuses the small tree branch. I was able to frame this shot thanks to the zoom lens, the photo turned out sharp despite zooming in.The A1 is also known by quite a few other names around the world, including Sure Shot WP-1, Autoboy D5 and Prima AS-1. It is not quite clear why Canon took this approach, as most of the models are identical with some optional differences. Not all claim to also be waterproof to 5m, but this may also be due to classifications of the word waterproof in different countries, which may have contributed to the name differences. Reversed Galilean viewfinder with projected frames. Within the image area are the AF frame, in-focus lamp and near-distance warning lamp, combination flash-ready and camera-shake warning mark, and parallax correction marks. 0.45x magnification. Nice write up! I bought a new in box Samsung ECX1 from Fireside Camera in San Fran last year. They had a bunch of them. Didn’t need it, but was taken by the fact that they still had new ones! Anyway, mine focuses perfectly, so I think your may just have suffered from that “who knows what happened to it in its previous life syndrome?”Poor is subjective though, and the Canon Sure Shot AF-7 might be better than you’d expect for less than the price of a roll of film. Use Flash On mode whenever shooting underwater, or when seeking to soften shadows on subjects in bright light (see my examples of my daughter’s portrait at the beach). Flash Off should be used in low light situations (this mode will force the camera to make a long exposure), or in places where flash photography is prohibited (will I take this camera to Disney World? Probably). Red Eye Reduction Auto mode is the standard shooting mode in which the camera does all of the work – most people will use this setting exclusively. And the Underwater Macro mode is for shooting fishies whenever they swim between 1.5 and 3.3 feet away from your face. The second part to the history of the Sure Shot A1 is the Canon Sure Shot range of cameras. By the late 1970s, compact cameras had well established themselves. In 1979 Canon released the original Sure Shot, also known as the AF35M and Autoboy. From this original model, the subsequent models were updated and in some cases had their own sub range. Some included fixed lenses, some zooms, some were high end models, some very basic lower end and some with date and panoramic features. When it arrived, I inserted a battery, and awaited my chance to use it. Unfortunately I left it on and when it was time to use the camera it would not fire up. I feared that maybe the camera, being so electronic no longer worked and put it aside.Next chance I had, I bought a new battery and it fired up, which was a great relief. Released as a sibling to the model above, the specifications were essentially the same aside from the lenses. The Canon Sure Shot Telemax featured both 38mm and 70mm lenses that you could switch between.

Apart from the above lofty aims, at its time of release it was also the lightest and smallest waterproof 35mm camera. It is no surprise that it was quite successful in what is effectively a sub category of the compact camera category of cameras. Batteries: Older versions use plain-old AA batteries, which are easier to find but don’t last as long as camera specific batteries like other models have. According to the manual, only ISO 100, 200, or 400 DX-coded film should be loaded into the Sure Shot, which will then automatically set the shutter speed accordingly; between 1/45 and 1/180. Thank you Ange, that’s great to hear it’s helped you 🙂 Enjoy and make some great photographs with yours! 🙂 Reply Everything I do and what I learn along the way gets shared on here, to inform and inspire you to get out and shoot as much - and as well - as you can too.I have this same camera, somewhere in my house. I haven’t put a new battery in it yet, but I will, and see if it functions. Couldn’t tell you when or who bought this camera (me or the wife), but I don’t recall ever using it. Your images are impressive, can’t wait to create some of my own.
