Launched in 2019, Tobermory Gin draws on over 200 years of history, being distilled in one of Scotland’s oldest commercial whisky distilleries. To complete the brand and share their highland spirit with the world, Caorunn have chosen a bottle that really fits well with their story. Its pentagonal shape represents the five Highland botanicals in the gin and gives that distinctive Caorunn contour that the brand’s become synonymous with over the years. Launching their first gin in August 2019, Tobermory Distillery can draw on over 200 years of distilling experience. Established in 1798, the distillery is famous for its whisky and cleverly marry this history into their gin, with a dash of new make spirit from their whisky stills added to the still before distillation, almost as a ‘liquid botanical’. But for a Martini with a delicious point of difference, look no further than the Clydesdale. Sharp, crisp apples provide a fresh fruit vibe, lifted to loftier heights by the citrus elements. It almost seems to transcend the barriers of gin, deliciously straying in to an almost apple brandy territory.

It’s fresh, like a walk across a field after a heavy downpour, hints of spice and juniper and something aromatic and floral at the end.” Created by James Porteous, Achroous Gin has built a strong reputation as an exceptional Scottish Gin, culminating in winning double gold at the prestigious San Fransisco World Spirits Competition. Standing in a bottle shop, I was instantly drawn to Silent Pool. I’d never tasted it but such was the beauty of the bottle, I was desperate to try it. The brand takes its name from the legendary haunted Silent Pool in Albury, England, where their distillery sits. Shetland Reel Simmer Gin is one of three ‘core’ gins produced at Saxa Vord Distillery by distiller Mark Turnbull. At 49% ABV it’s on the stronger side, and contains botanicals including orange peel, liquorice root and cumin.Isle of Harris Gin contains nine botanicals. These are: juniper, coriander seeds, cassia bark, angelica root, bitter orange, cubeb, liquorice root, orris root and sugar kelp. It’s a refreshing drink that’s made in a way, unlike any other gin on the market. The brand uses two almost antique stills to produce its award-winning gin, which is produced in batches of up to 500 liters at a time. By adding a splash of premium tonic, the alcohol power is eased slightly, with the booze reigned in a little to suggest a softer longer serve. The juniper is still massive, as it washes over your palate. But the citrus profile becomes elevated, as do the more floral characteristics, demonstrating a sophisticated elegance in the G&T serve.
