Okay let’s get this out of the way: the Lux Senior looks cool. It clearly draws inspiration from the flash bulbs of yesteryear, but those bulbs had many downsides, foremost among which is that they were single-use. They also took a while to reach full power, and were too hot to handle for a while after they went off. Any flash will bring you some sort of bag or case for protection during transport, but I really liked the little velvet pouch of this Godox Lux Junior. If your white balance is set to auto, you might see your images having a blue tinge. Dial in Flash WB, and you’d be seeing your results looking more neutral or warm. Out of curiosity, I tried using the Lux Senior off-camera in slave mode, positioned diagonally in relation to my son. I used the Lux Junior as a trigger at its minimum power of 1/64, and it worked flawlessly.
Last month we reported on the release of two new Godox flashes with a distinctive, retro look: the Lux Senior and Lux Junior. I like using flash, and I like Godox as a company – I own two Godox flashes ( TT600 and TT350) and an X2 wireless trigger. So when they offered to send us their two retro flashes for review, I jumped at the opportunity. One of its flaws – the fact that it doesn’t communicate with the camera to give the aperture and ISO value, is also one of the main advantages of this flash, because you can use it with any brand of camera, digital or film. So I was clearly using only a fraction of the light output which this unit is capable of. And if I wanted more light, I could have also used a higher ISO or wider aperture (I was shooting at a modest ISO 100-250 and f/5.6-13).

After some testing using Auto mode, I chose to use Manual mode because it allows me to make incremental adjustments and play with exposure. As I mentioned before, after a while, it becomes very intuitive to choose the power level, which is adjusted so easily just by turning a dial. I would turn the power switch to ON only after opening the flash to avoid accidentally triggering it while it’s closed. It’s not the most powerful of flashes, but I wouldn’t want to expose the interior to any heat the flash might generate if triggered. If you are a professional, cover events or do portrait sessions, Godox has the right solution for you at an unbeatable price, but it is not the Lux Junior.

To get started, the whole operation is very straightforward, as you want in a flash like this. Just insert two AAA batteries (not included in the box), turn it on, and in about 6 seconds, once the light turns green, it’s ready to use. Being simple is the core concept of Lux Junior. Grab it, select a mode, and start to create. Compatible to all camera types and embrace diversified aesthetics, it lets your creatives flow with no obstacle. However, time changes and tech upgrades, Lux Junior will bring you the pure happiness and beauty of the ‘80s.
