About this deal

Everything else about the tablet remains, including a fingerprint sensor embedded into the power button, two USB-C 3.1 ports and two 8-megapixel cameras. Comparing this starting option to the lowest-end iPad Pro (12.9-inch), the Pixel Slate comes in 200 bills lower, but with half the storage and what’s likely to be a much weaker processor. This layout can be vastly upgraded from here. There are Intel Core m3 and Y-series and even Core i5 processors available as well. Storage tops out at 256GB and memory can go as high as up 16GB on some configurations. The display does little to change my feeling about the pen; it’s clearly been designed for entertainment and office users as opposed to creatives. Google promises up to 10 hours of continuous use from Pixel Slate – which is also what it promised on the Pixelbook– regardless of configuration, and up to two hours of use from a 15-minute charge. In the main Settings screen, under “Display,” you’ll see a selection of languages and resolutions to choose from. Tap one of these options to begin customizing your display. Underneath that, you’ll find options for sound, keyboard & input methods, and more. Finally, under “Advanced settings,” scroll down until you see the option to create a new user account.

The i5 model sped through every task I threw at it. Multi-tab Chrome web ran smoothly, even with two windows open side-by-side. Android gaming apps played chug- and stutter-free, and basic photo editing in PhotoShop Express worked fine – although the rear of the tablet did become noticeably warm with prolonged use. Thanks to its 12.3”, 3000 x 2000 pixel touch screen, viewing your high resolution photos, films and videos will be a pleasure. It has been designed to convey immersive images and it makes for a great casual gaming and multimedia experience. The one sore spot is that Android app emulation on Chrome OS -- especially with a screen this huge -- makes it feel like you're using a giant phone instead of a tablet. The i5 version I tested blitzed through everyday tasks, and outside of a few Android games that failed to work, offered a seamless tablet-laptop experience. The only issue is its high upfront cost, which puts it in the same space as the more developed Surface Pro and iPad Pro.The Pen offers 2,048 levels of pressure sensitivity, which is half as much as you get with the Galaxy Book's S Pen and the Surface Pen (both 4,096), while Apple doesn't specify the pressure sensitivity of the Apple Pencil. The tablet mode tweaks the UI to look more like Android. Pop off the keyboard and the UI will change to display all the installed apps in a grid format, which makes it easier to navigate using just touch inputs. There so much about the Google Pixel Slate to love, including its beautiful screen, comfortable keyboard, great sound and long battery life. Unfortunately, this machine comes with a few asterisks, including some notable bugs that Google should fix soon. It will take longer, though, for Google Play apps to feel like native tablet apps. The dual speakers are noticeably meatier than the iPad (regular) and Samsung Galaxy Book against which I tested it. Bass extension was deeper and audio in films was significantly clearer. Tonal balance is better than expected for a tablet, making it easy to hear voices even during heated action scenes with rumbling engines and rattling gunfire. The only tablet I’ve tested with better audio is the Huawei MediaPad. Some users have reported sluggish, stuttery performance in tablet mode, and it appears that Google will fix this issue in Chrome OS 75. Google Pixel Slate keyboard

That starting price gets you an unnamed Intel Celeron processor powering that 12.3-inch ‘Molecular’ touchscreen at a 3,000 x 2,000-pixel resolution. That’s paired with 4GB of memory and a 32GB solid-state drive.

For instance, the new Surface Go uses an Intel Pentium Gold processor and has 64GB of storage – twice that of the Pixel Slate at its entry level spec – for 200 bills less. Sure, it’s also a 10-inch tablet, but it’s the power profile we’re concerned about here, as it should be a chief concern when buying a mobile computer.

The display is far from edge-to-edge, but in hand, the tablet’s metal chassis feels every bit as premium as the iPad Pro, and it has all the trimmings of a modern convertible. The Google Pixel Slate lasts for a reliably long amount of time. Specifically, the Pixel Slate lasted 9 hours and 51 minutes on the Laptop Mag Battery Test (web browsing at 150 nits), a time that beats the 8:13 average by more than 1.5 hours. The Surface Pro 6 (9:20) fell half an hour short, while the iPad Pro (13:14) and Galaxy Book 2 (10:41) made it longer. The Pixel Slate also outlasted the Pixelbook (7:43), which was tested at a less-demanding 100 nits rate. The “great for regular people, not so hot for creatives” trend continues with the Pixel Slate’s software.

Google Pixel Slate is the company's last detachable

I’m also a big fan of the optional folio keyboard, which is better than that of the iPad Pro’s in nearly every way. The bottom navigation bar has shortcuts to installed apps, plus a battery icon and shortcut to basic settings for items such as Wi-Fi and screen brightness. On the left is a handy shortcut to Google Assistant. Google Assistant remains a key selling point; it’s step above Microsoft’s Cortana and Apple’s Siri in nearly every way. So far so good? I thought so. But as before, the limitation of Chrome OS comes with its reliance on web, Chrome Store and Android applications. Unlike Windows, the OS doesn’t let you install third-party software easily. This isn’t a problem for regular folk since there are more than enough apps for web browsing, office work and basic video/music streaming. For basic office work, web browsing and media consumption the Pixel Slate’s screen is excellent. The “all new Molecular Display” is a 12.3-inch LCD panel with an impressive 3000 x 2000 resolution. The size and dimensions are large and sharp enough to make movie-watching and multiple window office work comfortable on the device. The Pixel Slate gets pretty bright, emitting up to 337 nits, which beats the 316-nit premium laptop average and comes close to the 350-nit Galaxy Book 2. We found brighter screens in the Surface Pro 6 (408 nits), iPad Pro (484 nits), and Pixelbook (421 nits). The Pixel Slate's brightness is strong enough for decent viewing angles, as I saw colors stay strong, and not darken, when viewed at 35 degrees to the left and right.
