I love the way that the siren song is variable in sound; it fades in and out so you can appreciate just the sound of the water, enjoy it altogether, and get these really lovely siren songs by themselves too. It doesn't feel like an audio loop, it feels like each second is truly unique! Compose a song that the singing mermaid might sing. You could use a song from The Little Mermaid as inspiration.

This is by far my favorite magic generator. Something about watery sounds paired with quiet singing and/or whispering really gets my brain to focus. Who done it? They didn't know what to expect, and the vivacity and colour of the culture and society they encountered is captured in an evocative, carefully observed narrative, often peppered with a wit and perspicacity that the reader feels privileged to share. The main difference between mermaids and Sirens is that the latter are predators, killers, and dangerous creatures. Seducing men with their voices and bodies. Mermaids may not necessarily kill men, like Sirens do. Turns the serial killer subgenre upside down with compelling but gruesome results. McDermid has many startling surprises in store and brilliantly pulls the rug out from under our feet, exploding the psychological cliches commonly found in more one-dimensional portraits of the twisted criminal mind. Associated with fertility and water, Atartgatis reminded her followers to conserve fish (something we could learn from today). Her worshippers never ate the fish swimming the lake near her temple, and adorned their heads with jewels. The first mermaid was worshipped, but since then, mermaids have also been feared as creatures who will conjure storms, steal human babies and lure fisherfolk and sea travellers to their deaths. With her dying breath (there’s a running folklore theme here) the mermaid cursed the townsfolk both now and in generations to come that they might suffer all manner of plight, from plague to war. When you next visit a mermaid’s location, look around you and savour what you see. Why would this location be ripe for mermaid myths, compared to other places in the area? What springs to mind as you look at the weather, the lay of the land, and consider the lives of people who have passed this way centuries before? What do you see when you look out onto the waters?

Just as the man reached out to grab the gold, the mermaid dived down into the pond in terror. Whether it was because of his foul language or whether she took fright at being beaten at her own challenge, we’ll never know. The mermaid has not been seen since, but if you come to the water and speak softly and politely, she may re-appear. The Cursing Mermaid of Colmonell The sounds of this Magic Generator coalesce to form one amazing and soothing atmosphere. I'm a digital artist, and this really helps me focus and create art. The sounds of the singing, the whispering, the soft and mystical noises... It's all so amazing. Every time I listen to this I hope to hear the sirens. Sometimes I don't hear their voices, and sometimes I do. It's magical. How many different patterns can you see in the illustrations. Can you try to recreate some of these… or use them in your own artwork? A thoroughly captivating and evocative memoir; one that’s been reissued this year courtesy of independent publisher, Muswell Press.
