About this deal

We do realise, however, that bokeh evaluation is subjective, so we've included several 100% crops for your perusal. Sharpness Or even a 22-55mm or 22-60mm. I'm almost always on the wide end. Paired with a 70-200 f4, it'd be an amazing travel setup. So, just like Sony and Pentax: all old system SLR era lenses are compatible with the new RF mount bodies. What allows us to achieve these precisely produced parts and such premium aesthetics is the impressive standard of manufacturing technology and rigorous quality control we have at the SIGMA Aizu Factory. Editor’s note: The following evaluation is meant to be viewed after reading the full review of the Leica 24-70mm f/2.8, as most of the information below focuses on showing how the Sigma lens performs in comparison to those results and is written from the assumption that readers have familiarized themselves with the same assessment of the Leica lens.

The lens comes with an AF/MF switch ②, which has a firm but ergonomic action, and the focus and zoom rings ① are smooth and precise owing to SIGMA’s advanced lubricant technologies.

Field Curvature and Sharpness

With no built-in image stabilization, there are only three controls in total: A pair of very nice, well-dampened zoom and manual focus rings and a focus mode selector switch on the left side of the barrel. With the lens set to its maximum aperture of f/2.8, there is some obvious light fall-off in the corners at both ends of the zoom range. Stopping-down to f/5.6 virtually eliminates this. So if size and weight are key, the Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary is the clear winner, albeit whilst offering 5mm shorter reach than the Tamron 28-75mm.

The Sigma 28-70mm F2.8 DG DN Contemporary ships with a plastic petal-shaped lens hood (LH706-01) that twists into place, but there's no soft case included as with the more expensive Art version. Focal Range Looking at the gallery shots, I think that the evaluation of cross-frame sharpness given in the video is a little harsh. The lens actually performs pretty well for sharpness out to the edges at all focal lengths even at f2.8. I think the results from the flat test subject at fairly close-range were probably affected by curvature of field. Center-frame sharpness is superb at shorter focal lengths, even wide open at f/2.8. Sharpness dips slilghtly as you head towards 70mm, though not by a noticable amouont.

The Tamron at 75mm is slightly sharper and has better contrast in the center of the frame, but the Sigma looks better in the midframe and corner area. Which lens will perform better for you will really depend on how you use such a lens and how important corner performance at wider apertures is to you. But keep in mind that 24-70/2.8 art is not that sharp. I am a big fan of sigma after using 50/1.4 and 85/14 art, but found the 24-70 art lens soft. But in all fairness, zoom lenses at this range are never close to prime performance wide open. The Sigma 24-70DN utilizes a stepping focus motor (STM) that makes fast, quiet focus changes. If you watch the video review you can see/hear the focus motor during focus changes in video. It’s all good news, though, as the focus is quiet, focus pulls are accurate and smooth, and there is little to no hunting or settling. I saw minimal focus breathing during focus pulls on the wide end, though you can see a bit of size changing at the telephoto end. Nothing extreme, though.
