About this deal

the beginning grabbed me and held on tight throughout the book! And that ending was devastatingly realistic! Don't expect this story to be wrapped nicely in pretty paper and tied up with a big red bow. It hit me hard!

MyHome.ie (Opens in new window) • Top 1000 • The Gloss (Opens in new window) • Recruit Ireland (Opens in new window) • Irish Times Training (Opens in new window)There are many strange happenings, my boy. Many mysteries beyond the power of the human mind to comprehend." (Edward T. Lowe, Jr.) Sally has learned to live with and accept herself for what she is - a recluse and ‘strange’. Someone socially awkward that is mistrusting of others, and whilst something ‘rare’ and different, she doesn’t know how she got to this place and why her father has encouraged her to disengage from the world around her. An extraordinary book. Compulsive reading, with one of the most complex, intriguing and moving characters I’ve ever encountered in fiction.”

The old house hunkers on its hill, all peeling white paint, bay windows, and spindled wooden railings overgrown with climbing roses and poison oak. A] riveting mystery, with puzzles piling up... Nugent's spectacular novel gives us both despair and hope.” In Sally Diamond, Nugent has given us an astounding creation with a singular voice . . . an absorbing, twisty, compulsive psychological thriller with surprising humour and pathos' Sunday Independent We'll meet Sally Diamond, a forty-two year old Irish woman, who cares for her dying father. Thomas is a retired psychiatrist. Sally's mother was a physician who passed away some time ago. As we come to know Sally more and more, it appears that she is part of the autism spectrum. But it is far, far more complicated than that. Liz Nugent (born 1967 in Dublin) is an Irish novelist. She is the author of five crime novels. Her latest novel is Strange Sally Diamond, published in the Ireland and UK in March 2023.

A whole world and three distinct characters have been created in this one sentence. Our narrator is aware of the fact that he is an alcoholic, but does Thomas know that the narrator is? Does he know that he is? Where is poor Mr Kelliher going to find a third alcoholic to keep his doors open? A small bar in a country town depending on alcoholics sounds like a sad and desperate place. What a fantastic setup for a story. I promise you that what follows does not disappoint. You see, we’re first introduced to Sally Diamond, having thrown her recently deceased dad’s remains into an incinerator behind their house, because she has mistaken his instructions on how he would like to be buried: “When I die, just put me out with the trash.”
