About this deal

Study the Illustrations: Sometimes words don’t match actions. Look closely at the spread where the Good Egg describes all the good things he does. Do his words match the pictures? While I thought the illustrations were cute, I wasn't completely sold on the story line (or the fact that the 'Good' Egg is any good at all). Goodreads Choice Awards Project: Read as many of the opening round Best Picture Book nominees as possible. 11 to go! Have you read The Good Eggby John Jory and Pete Oswald? If you have not, make it a priority to read it! This book is by the same author of The Bad Seed, and is hilarious. In addition to being funny, there is a great message that goes along with the book. The Good Egg

The Good Egg – HarperCollins

This story is great for those students who tend to be the mother hens in your classroom. I feel like every school year, I have a student who falls into this category! The Good Egg encourages self-care and being able to try new things. One of my favorite things about this book is the illustrations. There are some really funny details in the pictures. And the author entertains you with fun egg puns. From the bestselling creators of The Bad Seed, a timely story about not having to be Grade A perfect! You could also use The Good Egg to make a connection to tattling. Even though the Good Egg never tattle-tails, he IS overly concerned with everyone else’s behavior; just like the little kiddos who are always coming in after recess and lunch break with tattles about everyone and thing under the sun. The Good Egg is a positive role model for his willingness to help others, his attempt to remedy bad behavior of those around him, and mostly for his ability to step away from his comfort zone to prioritize his own well-being. He's courageous, determined to persevere on journey of self-discovery. He's also eager to forgive and learns to find positive in others and his situation.

Seriously disappointed in the message this book sends to young children - do a lot of superficial, selfish tasks, and you’ll feel better about everyone else’s bad behavior. In this follow-up to Jory John and Pete Oswald’s popular picture book The Bad Seed, meet the next best thing: a very good egg, indeed! After reading this story, we will be looking at the character traits that The Good Egg has at the beginning, middle, and end of the story. Here is an anchor chart that we will be using to help guide us. My family reads all the Goodreads-award-nominated picture books every year. This is book #6 (of more than 20) of 2019, and we were all over the map on this one, from 1-4.5 stars. A sequel to The Bad Seed? The message of putting yourself before others is not what I want to teach my kids. The extreme bad behavior of the other eggs is unrealistic, and the author has the Good Egg deal with that behavior by going on a solo journey of “self care,” including going to a spa and “breathing in and out.” That type of “self care” doesn’t work in real life, so why teach it to children, furthering the selfish “world-revolves-around-me” mentality of youth today. This is one of those titles that makes me so happy to be a children's librarian. That there are such talented authors and illustrators in the world who dedicate their time to bringing joy to children and adults through such charming works is a blessing.Having read The Bad Seed last year, I was eager to give The Good Egg a try. I actually like this one a little more than its predecessor... mostly because I can really relate to the main character! I loved the art. It was also a nice concept and the message is pretty good in itself that sometimes you just have to let go but the text and the execution wasn't that great. I loved the first book in the series but this doesn't compare for me. In The Good Egg by Jory John, an egg suffering from a breakdown, takes some time out and realises it doesn’t have to be perfect. The book's themes include: Kids will love the hilarious antics of the bad eggs, while teachers, parents, and some children will likely recognize themselves in the good egg. Doesn’t worrying about others, trying to make everything perfect, and neglecting to look after yourself sound awfully familiar?

Have you read the story Winter Dance? It`s a fun story about a fox who is trying to figure out what he should do now that winter is here.

Venn Diagram: Have the children complete a venn diagram with either words or pictures, comparing themselves to the Good Egg. I love that the Good Egg is self-reflective and takes it upon himself to make some healthy choices. He gets out in nature, reads lots, writes, paints and de-stresses with yoga and bubble baths. It’s good to present these options to kids and encourage them to find their own calming practices.

It’s funny, timely, and is brought to life with the amazing illustrations of the oh-so-talented Pete Oswald, who also illustrated The Sad Little Fact. Why does the Good Egg get so stressed out when the other eggs misbehave? Do you get bothered by the activity and energy of those around you? What helps you keep calm and not get upset?
