About this deal

Mark where you want the eyes on the pattern and then place the mark on both sides of the unicorn's face (so the eyes aren't crooked. Hand stitch in place. (I forgot to add the eyes at this step, so it isn't pictured. Let me say, it's a lot harder adding eyes later on). Take one face panel (A) and lay it right side up. Take your Horn/Ears/Hair strip and line up the connector seam with the mark you made in Step 1 of this section. Flip the strip over, keeping the lines lined up, and clip into place. Be careful about keeping your ears (unicorn's ears, not your ears) out of the seam! Like its predecessor, the dinosaur, this unicorn was one of our happy projects. Since Jeffrey makes a living by building metal helmets to fit custom heads, he’s better than me at figuring out patterns, so we ended up working on it together. It was a lot of fun. As a matter of fact, he laughed half of the time we were making the beast. Details: This white unicorn promises a wild ride. The stem is covered with soft fabric and colourful ribbons flutter in the mane. When pressing on the right ear, a neighing sounds three times. Now the trip can begin. Batteries included. Horn - this is one of the hardest part in the whole Instructable! Sewing circles like this is hard work. Take your time and use lots of pins. Just think, because you are taking your time here, that means you don't have to hand sew on the horn later! After cutting the hair into the 9"x10" pieces, mark a 1/2" line on one short (9") end with a friction pen or white chalk. Then take your ruler and lay it perpendicular to the marked line, 1" off the side edge of the rectangle. Make your cut with a rotary cutter all the way up to the marked line, leaving a half inch at the top uncut. Continue on to make 10 "hairs" total in each piece.* Lay Hair section right side up, and place ears as shown, leaving at least 1/4" of room off both edges of the strip. Basting the ears at this time will make step 2 a whole lot easier.

I have a few certain weaknesses. Chocolate. Moss. Lemons. Rainbows. When I am feeling positive, I call them my secret ingredients. If there is a way to squeeze them in a project, I won’t miss a chance. And there are times when I will build a cake – er – a project around my longing for dark chocolate. That, unfortunately, happens more often than I’d like to admit! February is a trying month. The need for something bright and cheerful is at its height. Having made a couple of chocolate cakes already and not expecting moss to show up for the next couple of months, I put my hope in rainbows. Not that I expected to see them around here in February, but I could certainly make some.

Needle-felting is very simple. You take a little bit of wool and work it with a needle until all the fibres intertwine and form a three-dimensional object. Working it into a piece of felted wool (or acrylic felt, for that matter!) is even easier because you have a base and you are creating a flat applique instead of a three-dimensional object. We’ll start with a mane. Decide how long hair in the mane should be (~4″) and cut a strip of paper this wide. The length of the strip should be equal to the overall length of the mane (~16). Choose thin paper because you’ll need to sew through several layers of it later. You can paint cheeks and eyes with a marker, or forego the former and make the latter out of buttons. There are really quite a lot of ways to do it! I tried needle-felting last year and fell absolutely in love with the process, so I used my felting needle to add some colour to the cheeks. I did it in the beginning, but I actually found it easier to felt onto after it was stuffed, so I recommend doing it at this point. Tie the long pieces of yarn in each of the holes to make a beautiful unicorn mane. This is a great way to use up leftover yarn. If you don’t have yarn try strips of crepe paper or tulle. This gives the ear some movement.

Pin the halves together inside-out, with the mane sandwiched between and with the long part pointing inward. Sew them together, leaving a small opening at the bottom to turn the unicorn right side out and stuff later. Stuffing the Unicorn Hobby horse features grip handles and wheels, it's sure to prove a faithful companion and have fun for many years.

The traditional Hobby Horse toy has been given a fun and colourful upgrade! This must-have toy filled with simplicity and wonder is a great addition to any bedroom or toy box and offers gallops of fun. Coming in either a unicorn or a traditional horse design, whichever you receive is sure to make an entertaining play activity for your little one. Featuring neighing and clopping sounds to bring imaginative games to life, there's almost nothing your child can't become! Lightly wrap yarn around it in layers of colours. We decided that each colour would only occur once, but you can make them repeat if you like.
