About this deal

Never take 2 doses at the same time. Never take an extra dose to make up for a forgotten one. What if I take too much? If your doctor or midwife recommends docusate, instead of lactulose or Fybogel, it’s usually ok to use this medicine while breastfeeding. The amounts of docusate found in breast milk are probably very small and are unlikely to affect your baby.

Docusate sodium oral solution is also available without a brand name, ie as the generic medicine, in both paediatric and adult strengths. Normal and regular bowel movement is important for most people. However, what is ‘normal and regular’ varies from person to person. Some may have a bowel movement every day, others less often. Whatever it is like for you, it is best that your bowel movement has a regular pattern.

Fibre supplements add bulk to your poo. Bulky poos are softer and easier to pass. Fibre supplements are traditionally considered as a first treatment. About Superdrug Medicines and their possible side effects can affect individual people in different ways. The following are some of the side effects that are known to be associated with DulcoEase. Just because a side effect is stated here doesn't mean that all people using this medicine will experience that or any side effect.

The dual action is effective at relieving constipation without straining. The capsules usually relieve constipation in one to two days. Docusate also stimulates the nerve endings in the walls of the large bowel (colon) and rectum. This makes the muscles in the bowel wall contract more often and with increased force, which moves the stools through the colon to the rectum so that the bowel can be emptied.Whatever the cause, constipation can be uncomfortable. It may make you feel bloated and heavy or generally ‘off colour’. Sometimes it causes headaches.

Docusate sodium may pass into breast milk so should be used with caution during breastfeeding. As with all medicines, you should get medical advice from your doctor before taking DulcoEase if you are breastfeeding. Enema – squeeze the tube of liquid gently into your anus. The information leaflet which comes with your docusate will explain how to do this. Docusate works in two ways. It lowers the surface tension of hard, dry stools that have accumulated in the bowel, allowing water and fats to penetrate them. This makes the stools softer and easier to pass. This can be particularly helpful for people with piles or an anal fissure. Drink plenty of fluids (6 to 8 glasses a day) while you are taking docusate or your constipation may get worse. What if I forget to take it?

DulcoEase capsules contain the active ingredient docusate sodium, which is a type of medicine called a laxative.

Adults and adolescents over 12 years of age should generally start treatment by taking one capsule three times a day. If this is not effective you can take a dose up to five times a day if needed, spread over the course of the day. Once your symptoms start to improve you should take the medicine less frequently. Taking an extra dose of docusate as a one-off is unlikely to harm you, but it is a good idea to drink lots of water. You may get diarrhoea and stomach pain, but this will usually get better within 1 or 2 days. Prolonged use of DulcoEase should be avoided. If you are still constipated after five days of treatment, if you need to take a laxative every day, or if you have persistent abdominal pain, you should consult your doctor for advice.

If you're pregnant or breastfeeding, you can try to treat constipation without taking a medicine. This involves eating more fibre and drinking plenty of fluids. It may also help to do gentle exercise. The safety of docusate sodium for use during pregnancy has not been fully established, though it has been in widespread use for many years with no reported harmful effects. As with all medicines, you should get medical advice from your doctor before taking DulcoEase if you are pregnant. Liquid – this comes with a plastic cup or spoon to measure the dose. Do not use a kitchen spoon as it will not give the right amount. If you do not have a cup or spoon, ask your pharmacist for one. When you've swallowed it, drink plenty of water or have another drink, such as milk or orange juice. Medicated suppositories are a typically reliable, fast-acting form of stimulant laxative that are inserted into the rectum. These suppositories, which may contain bisacodyl or glycerin, help move the poo out of the body by providing lubrication and stimulation. They stimulate the bowel muscles in the intestine to help encourage a bowel movement within minutes. You will usually feel more comfortable within 1 or 2 days of treatment. Reduce the dose as your condition gets better.
