The Bottled-in-Bond of 1897 is one of the highest standards regarding the quality of distilled spirits, and it is meant to protect consumers from buying poor-quality whiskeys [ 1]. It was almost impossible to get away from this whiskey at one point. That’s not some grave injustice — this is a perfectly fine bourbon, for what it is. The whiskey is sourced from the Four Roses Distillery (for now) and then aged at Bulleit’s facilities, adding their own mark on the juice. That being said, recent controversies and that over-saturation have taken some of the sparkle off of this expression. Evan Williams Bottled-In-Bond is a premium whiskey that meets the exact requirement of a BiB bourbon.
This is a top-notch dram and one consistent bourbon. With notes of toffee, caramel, cinnamon, oak and a long spicy finish, bourbons don’t get more flavourful than Buffalo Trace. The initial flavor of Evan Williams bourbon is actually not that compelling, but there are some interesting things to be experienced later on. It’s sort of like meeting someone you don’t think is fascinating at first, but later you decide he could be quite charming. As I take more sips, I continue to taste the initial flavors with the addition of caramel, honey, vanilla, apple butter, allspice, jalapeno pepper, wintergreen mints, leather, herbal tea with chamomile notes, and cinnamon.Finish: Some of the graininess subside on the finish leaving behind more Payday candy bar notes. I can even taste some chocolate after a brief pause. The chocolate helps highlight some oak on the finish too. The finish is uncomplicated and just sweet enough to remember the last sip as an enjoyable affair. Score: 5.5/10 Let’s say you want to lean away from the middle of the road and into peaty whisky territory. You aren’t going to find a peaty, smoky, drinkable Scotch Whisky cheaper than Shieldaig Highland Peaty Single Malt. Although it’s origins are unknown, it’s a single malt from somewhere in the Highlands and it costs the same as bargain buys like Cutty Sark. Sorry, but I can’t get past the name of this brand. It feels like a statue that needs to fall. We live in a world where NASCAR gets that message, it’s time this whiskey did too. Palate: My initial impression is that this doesn’t taste a day over 5 years old. The graininess I find is pretty apparent. There is enough sweetness to make me not mind, but this isn’t going to blow away your expectations.

Small Batch: A subjective term signaling a bourbon made using a select number of barrels or recipes in a blended bottling. Heaven Hill’s Evan Williams brand has been budget-priced and widely distributed for several years, but that hasn’t undercut the substantial quality of what the distillery is crafting out of their Louisville campus. Their standard Evan Williams Single Barrel Bourbon is a textbook example of an excellent single barrel bourbon at a great price. The nose has both vanilla buttercream and amber caramel with funky vanilla buttercream notes thrown in, all at different points in this huge complex monolithic nose. A hint of green apple creeps in before it moves on to a dry earthy nuance. Some very lightly roasted oak peppercorns and dried orange peel come out and join the fruit and oak and give you a nice touch of sweetness. It has a juicy sweet apple taste with hints of light spice and caramel. The bourbon finish is on point. FAQs
