About this deal

Bobby’s bowl, some pictures and also a plaster cast made ‘from life’ as the basis of today’s statue are also there. (Wonder how they got the dog to stand still when they poured plaster on him?) Over the years films and videos have been made about this remarkable story, including a movie, and an Edinburgh toy company came up with the Greyfriars Bobby toy. Guided tours of the kirkyard are given by a number of groups, including the Greyfriars Bobby Walking Theatre and the Greyfriars Kirkyard Trust.

Greyfriars Bobby: A Heartwarming Tale Story of Greyfriars Bobby: A Heartwarming Tale

Bobby is a Skye Terrier who makes his abode in Greyfriars, Scotland. (When you say his name, make sure to pronounce it in a British/Scottish accent. Sounds better like that, of course.) This happy "little ruffian of a terrier" lived during Queen Victoria's reign--his true story begins in 1858 and takes the course of many years thereafter. Bobby has a very courageous story... The story has attracted the attention of many other authors, among them the Scottish writer and historian, the late Forbes Macgregor, who published ‘Greyfriars Bobby: the Real Story at Last’, revised in 2002. The authorities assumed Traill, obviously making money from his association with the dog, would pay. Inexplicably he refused, claiming the dog didn’t belong to him. Perhaps Bobby represents all dogs – their unquestioning loyalty and faithfulness, especially when food is involved.

Much of the film location work was actually around Stirling Castle. Stirling Old Town kirkyard even stood in for Greyfriars. Most folk know the tale of Greyfriars Bobby, the faithful dog and his vigil by his master’s grave. There is certainly a core of truth – but both sentiment and commerce have altered the story. Maybe there was even more than one Bobby…

Greyfriars Bobby by Eleanor Atkinson | Waterstones

Siddal, Lizzy (17 August 2010). "Greyfriars Bobby – Eleanor Atkinson". Lizzy’s Literary Life . Retrieved 13 February 2019. Cooper, Dalton (23 April 2021). "Grand Theft Auto 5 Dog Visits Its Owner's Grave Every Day". Game Rant . Retrieved 21 July 2023. On 14 January it is 151 years since the faithful Greyfriars Bobby died. There will be a ceremony in Greyfriars Kirkyard to mark the occasion, usually organised by the charity, Dogs Trust. This is a story about Bobby which is an excerpt from my book Greyfriars Bobby: The Most Faithful Dog in the World. Bobby would follow William Dow, a local joiner and cabinet maker to the same Coffee House that he had frequented with his now dead master, where he was given a meal. John eventually died of the disease on the 15th February 1858 and was buried in Greyfriars Kirkyard. Bobby soon touched the hearts of the local residents when he refused to leave his master’s grave, even in the worst weather conditions.

There is no doubt that Bobby really existed, or that he spent lengthy periods of time at Greyfriars: not less than fourteen eyewitnesses saw him there from 1860 until 1872. These observations do not support the myth of Bobby’s ‘faithful mourning’, however: the jolly little dog went all over the district, ratting in the kirk and visiting friends as far away as Bristo to obtain a meal. It is also a fact that although the mawkish readers of the RSPCA’s Animal World remained reverent to Bobby and his legend, many Edinburgh people ‘in the know’ were well aware that the story of the mourning little dog was a complete invention. However, the Lord Provost, Sir William Chambers, stepped in. He personally paid the fee, on the grounds that the Town Council owned the burial ground and tolerated the dog who stayed there. The accuracy of stories of Greyfriars Bobby has been challenged many times: for instance, in Forbes Macgregor's Greyfriars Bobby: The Real Story at Last, [16] Jan Bondeson's Greyfriars Bobby: The Most Faithful Dog in the World, [17] and Richard Brassey's "Greyfriars Bobby The Most Famous Dog in Scotland". [18] Tourists also tend to visit the graves, as Greyfriars Bobby was buried near to his much-loved owner in 1872.
