About this deal

The last major hardware item to cover is the SSDs. There are two of them on this model, 1TB each. They are also in RAID 0 for a boost in performance. But is it worth it? I’m going to lean towards no…

These are the results with Vantage set to Balanced, a mid-level profile with quieter fans and only slightly limited power settings: Balanced ModeUpdate2: 2022 updates of the Lenovo Legion 7 series are available now, in both Intel and AMD variants. Our full review of the 2022 Legion 7i series is available here. Specs sheet as reviewed– Lenovo Legion 7i 2021

Legion 7i review (Gen 7 model- Core i9, RTX 3080Ti) Lenovo Legion 7i review (Gen 7 model- Core i9, RTX 3080Ti)

My initial battery rundown test drained the Legion 7’s 78Wh cell in just 3hrs 25mins, which is absolutely dire. However, I then realised that the integrated AMD Vega GPU was turned off and with it Nvidia’s Optimus graphics switching system. Finally, here’s how this Ryzen 9 5900HX implementation compares to other same-tier models on the market, both Intel and AMD. This is a solid Ryzen 9 implementation here and only outmatched on the AMD side by the higher-power R9 in the ROG G15 Advantage. GPU performance was pretty consistent between models, which is to be expected since the power limits are the same. The three available modes are Performance, Balanced and Quiet. You can also switch between these modes with Fn-Q. The power button even has a different color that tells you what mode you’re in. Here’s a table that shows what each mode does: Quiet As a novelty for this year, Lenovo implements Force Sensors in the WASD keys, as well as offers an extra set of switches and keycaps (white, glossy) that you can replace the standard ones with. The idea is that you can set-up the keys to react differently based on how deep you are pressing them, and you can customize the behavior per each game, which can come in useful in certain simulators or driving games, among others. The overall feel of the laptop just oozes quality to me. I already liked the Legion 5 Pro for it’s solid build quality and this just feels even better. It’s a little heavier than I’m used to but still pretty easy to carry and the weight distribution is good. I wouldn't get too hung up on 2dB difference though. For fan noise, I take a reading and record average sound over a 1 minute span. The hi/low range during that period is sometimes 4dB depending on the distance I hold the mic, fan fluctuation, etc. I just report my results as is, but it could easily be a couple dB different if I were to try it again. I other words, it's not an exact science. On the Quiet profile, btw, the CPU runs at only 25W, with sub 30 dB noise levels and temperatures in the 50s C.

The fan noise is much quieter in Quiet mode on the AMD version, but the performance is also a lot lower. Clearly, this is because of the TDP difference in the CPUs. Personal preference of fan noise/performance ratio at this point. If you need the most CPU power you can get, the Intel model is clearly the better buy here. The performance bump is anywhere between 10-20% higher, depending on the benchmark and the number of cores you’re using. Let’s get into the details of the design now. The lid is just perfect to me. It’s smooth and plain with a nice-looking Legion logo in the corner. This could easily pass for professional use, provided you turn off the RGB. Also keep in mind that the CPU/GPU utilization between tests was different for both models. Note my screenshot for HZD in performance modes on both versions. For Intel it used on average 45W for CPU and 148W for the GPU. For AMD it used on average 30W for the CPU and 157W for the GPU. So dynamic boost is treating the configs very differently for the same game.

Finally, I’ll mention the camera placed at the top of the screen, and flanked by microphones. The ensemble does what it’s supposed to, and the camera is FHD resolution and a wide angle, so a little better than what you’re normally getting on laptops these days. I also appreciate the electronic shutter offered on the right side of the laptop, which lets you electronically kill both the camera and the microphones when you don’t need them. Battery life With Hybrid mode enabled, the laptop uses regular Optimus, which supports FreeSync. But in this mode the graphics are passed through the iGPU on their way to the laptop’s main display, so your performance will be slightly lower in some loads and games. Hardware and performance Not a lot changes over the default Performance profile, but the GPU scores do improve by 2-7% in some of the tests. There are some differences in CPU performance between models. If you need the most CPU performance, the Intel model is clearly the better buy, as the scores were significantly higher across the board. But if you’re simply gaming, I don’t think you’ll notice as much of a difference. The laptop’s performance on battery power is somewhat similar to the Quiet mode explained above. Hence, FHD+ with medium settings should be doable in most games. Don’t expect more than 1 to 2 hours of gameplay, based on how much are you willing to limit the fps cap. Lenovo Legion 7 Review: Hot and Heavy Powerhouse

At first, I was surprised by how loud the speakers were. When I began listening to “Omar’s Coming” by Westside Gunn, I noticed how muffled the song was. Then, upon further inspection, I lifted the laptop and realized there were two smaller speakers underneath. Once I lifted it off the surface, Immediately heard the extra “oomph” they provided. What isn’t a hassle is the large, 4.7 x 3-inch touchpad. Its smooth, glass surface makes for easy and comfortable cursor control, and I had no problems inputting multi-touch gestures like scrolling with two fingers and switching apps with three fingers. Lenovo Legion 7i Audio You do get is the option to easily switch off the LEGION RGB logo with FN+L, if you want to. However, I couldn’t find a way to disable the lightbars independently of the keyboard, though – not sure if that’s not an option, or I just couldn’t figure it out. You can manually customize each light zone in Spectrum, but there’s no OFF option of any kind.
