Beowulf is one of the most important texts in Old English and is believed to date from somewhere between 975 and 1025 - around the time of Alfred the Great. The author is unknown.

A son and grandson of actors, Michael has acting in his blood and enjoys collaborating and performing live adaptations of his books at festivals, concerts and theatres. The book made me feel bored when listening to it but, as soon as my teacher put it down and stopped reading I felt as though I wanted to keep reading as it always ended on a cliff-hanger.It is not known with certainty who wrote Beowulf, although it is thought to have been put together sometime between the 8th and 11th centuries. It may have been written on behalf of King Canute, an 11th century Danish king.

Beowulf, a prince of Geatland, hears of the Danes’ suffering and gains permission from his king to sail to their assistance. The only known existing copy of Beowulf is now in the British Library in London. The manuscript was put in paper frames to protect it, in 1845, although it is still very fragile.

This is a great way to assess their understanding of the poem and for your pupils to think critically about it.
