Momo (novel) - Wikipedia

Well, I'm too old for it," said Manny, as he studied the error message his laptop was showing him. "I find it painfully unsophisticated and badly written. It never gives me anything." He pondered a while. Then he said, 'You must never think of the whole street at once, understand? You must only concentrate on the next step, the next breath, the next stroke of the broom, and the next, and the next. Nothing else.'The story of Momo plays a role in the Korean TV series My Lovely Sam Soon, where the main character's niece chooses to not speak due to post-traumatic stress of having both her parents killed in a car accident. The lead character buys the book and reads it (by himself and also to his niece) to try to understand his love interest more. The main theme of Momo can be seen as a criticism of consumerism and stress. [1] [2] It describes the personal and social losses produced by unnecessary consumption, and the danger to be driven by a hidden interest group with enough power to induce people into this life style. Michael Ende has also stated to have had the concept of currency demurrage in mind when writing Momo. [3] Manny was working late one evening when he received an unexpected visitor. He was an old man with white hair and gold-rimmed glasses, curiously dressed in a lace-embroidered doublet and a periwig, and he was carrying a book.

Momo is one of those rare books that would do well in a fourth-grade classes, but is also strangely releveant to adults. The story centers around a girl named Momo who took residence in an ancient, abandoned amphitheater in an unnamed town, which is populated by a series of people who do small-town jobs (Bepo Streetsweeper, Nino who owns an inn, Guido Guide who works as a fake - albeit enterataining - tourist guide). Momo, also known as The Grey Gentlemen or The Men in Grey, is a fantasy novel by Michael Ende, published in 1973. In 2015, the Royal Danish Opera commissioned composer Svitlana Azarova to write Momo and the Time Thieves. Its world premiere occurred at the Copenhagen Opera House in October, 2017. [12] Beppo - was Momo's best friend. He was short and always walked a bit crouched. He talked little and only the truth. Beppo thought the biggest danger came from lies. There was another long silence. At last he went on, 'And all at once, before you know it, you find you've swept the whole street clean, bit by bit. What's more, you aren't out of breath.' He nodded to himself. 'That's important, too,' he concluded.”Over the next few months, Manny somehow found himself reading one German book after another. He read Grimms Märchen, and Krabat, and Das doppelte Lottchen, and Madita, and Karlsson vom Dach. Finally, a couple of weeks before Christmas, he opened Momo. He found he couldn't put it down. He had just finished the last chapter when he heard someone clear their throat behind him. You see, Momo,' he [Beppo Roadsweeper] told her one day, 'it's like this. Sometimes, when you've a very long street ahead of you, you think how terribly long it is and feel sure you'll never get it swept.' Momo's adventure takes her from the depths of her heart, which her own time flows from in the form of lovely hour-lilies, to the lair of the Men in Grey themselves, where the time that people believe they are saving is hoarded. After Master Hora stops time, but gives Momo one hour-lily to carry with her, she has exactly one hour to defeat the Men in Grey in a frozen world where only they and she are still moving. If you think this sounds like a boring, philosophical read for children, think again. It is one of the most compellingly exciting stories imaginable, capturing a teenage boy (who already knew the plot) so completely that he forgot time and place to finish it in one session yesterday. It is so touching that he came down to breakfast today and said that he had actually cried, adding: After he had heard that the Men in Grey had Momo and that they'll let her go if he saves 100 thousand hours Beppo believed them. When the time started again he and Momo were together and happy together. The Master Hora - had the duty to send time to everyone in need. He had to keep on doing that to win over the Men in Grey. Even though he never left his house, he had all seeing glasses that helped him to observe everything he wanted to know. When the book was published in the U.S. in 1985, Natalie Babbit from the Washington Post commented: "Is it a children's book? Not here in America." [8] Momo was republished by Puffin Press on January 19, 2009. [9] The original English translation The Grey Gentlemen by Frances Lobb was published in 1974. A new English translation, Momo, was published in 1984. A newly translated, newly illustrated U.S. edition was released by McSweeney's in August 2013, in celebration of the book's fortieth anniversary. The McSweeney edition was scheduled for a new release in January 2017. However, some illustrations (created by Marcel Dzama) in the McSweeney release, such as Momo's appearance, do not conform to the text in the book. Beppo rushed to the theatre to warn his friend. He came before the Man in Grey but Momo wasn't there. Before Beppo came to the theatre a turtle carrying a sign "Follow me" appeared. So my students will not do standardised peer collaboration games for mentor time from now on. They will sit in a circle, pretending it is an amphitheatre, and they will listen to their teacher read "Momo": Again he paused for thought before adding, 'That way you enjoy your work, which is important, because then you make a good job of it. And that's how it ought to be.'

He cleaned the streets for so long that he created a life philosophy from it. He said it wasn't good thinking about how long the street was so that people wouldn't give up before the finish line. I truly feel that MOMO, as a concept, has had an impact on the Dutch restaurant scene. Creative Asian cuisine was one aspect we were unfamiliar with. And if you ask me, it is here to stay. Especially in a cosmopolitan city like Amsterdam.” -Robert Kranenborg You cannot, repeat: cannot, go into this book with the expectations of "hard," realist fiction. Then again, if you know anything about Michael Ende (the author of the Never Ending Story), you won't.
