About this deal

Many colorful stars are packed close together in this image of the globular cluster NGC 1805, taken by the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. We moved to England the year I turned eight, and this has really helped me punctuate my childhood memories because of the shift in environment. Saff mysteriously then has multiple memories of her mother's childhood in Kuwait when smelling her mother's magical perfume. This was a great book that will really engage many young readers but there will need to be clear understanding of the children and any family circumstances as well as being ready to support children’s reactions to the emotions around dealing with illness and death.

She dreams herself into a house where she has never been but where her mother lived in her childhood. Despite this, "A Pocketful of Stars" will suit middle-school readers as it deals with friendship, bereavement, guilt and self-awareness in a well-written debut. I enjoyed the mix of reality and fantasy and how it dealt with grief and the struggles of being a teenage girl.A Pocketful of Stars was a touching read of a young girl struggling in school and feeling guilt that a heated argument she had with her mother put her in hospital in a coma. The story I wrote from the very start has always been about Safiya and Aminah, and the fact that Safiya experiences her mother’s memories whilst she’s in a coma; but almost everything else has changed. Here is a quick description and cover image of book A Pocketful of Stars written by Aisha Bushby which was published in August 8, 2019.

In the dense center of one of these clusters, stars are 100 to 1,000 times closer together than the nearest stars are to our Sun, making planetary systems around them unlikely. Her mum doesn’t understand Safiya’s love of gaming and Safiya doesn’t think they have anything in common. As Safiya discovers more about her mothers home and past, she figures out it is like her favourite video game and figures out how to play it. Then she falls into a strange world that seems to be coming from her mother's memories of her childhood in Kuwait - and Safiya's own favourite computer games. Fine, you think of a better game to play while we watch,’ she says, chucking her napkin at me, grinning.

I want to say that growing up is difficult, particularly when you have to deal with people who are a little less than kind to you, but being an adult is too.

The following suggestions offer a spectrum of different perspectives and are well worth seeking out. Before I got an agent and book deal writing was my creative escape, and so I spent all of my free time, when I wasn’t at work, reading and writing. This game in her head overwhelms her, as does the tragic incident that is changing her life once more. A young untamed girl and a lonely cowboy strive to keep her land and maintain the wilderness past generations had tamed enough to make a living and enjoy life filled with adventure and humor and the grit needed to survive.Join our community to get personalised book suggestions, extracts straight to your inbox, 10% off RRPs, and to change children’s lives. I read a book a few weeks ago that snuck into my heart and stayed there, which turned up right when I needed it. When I was working on it as a debut I still hadn’t fully grasped the mechanics of storytelling, so I found myself getting quite muddled at times. It tackles many different types of relationships but mainly the relationship between a teenage girl and her mother.

The whole way through the editing process – from first draft through to final edits – we have regular chats about the story. Soon enough they’re in a full-blown conversation about jewellery-making, even though Mum knows nothing about it.I see a lot of my life as ‘before’ and ‘after’ the move and it often feels like two different people living two totally different lives… That’s kind of Safiya and Aminah in A Pocketful of Stars. I have been through something similar (though with no magical perfume bottle, sadly) and what struck me most about grief and trauma is that it is never what you expect it to be. Suddenly, Saff realises it's a game and she has to win the game to save her mother before it's too late. It will break your heart and then put it back together again and it will live with you long after the final word.
