About this deal

I rarely read children's novels but the illustration and the title caught my eye that I just had to request for it! The world of this story feels deep and somewhat heavy, but the overall tone isn’t one of fear or danger thanks to Little Echo herself, whose large round ears and sweet face are instantly appealing.

A very fun story with good illustrations that will capture a child's imagination and allow mom or day or grandparent to have a great time reading this book and imitating echoes. This is a picture book that personifies an echo in a cave, and eventually shows the echo with a friendly, slightly-rabbit type shape.Too afraid to speak, she simply echos what she hears: the cacophony of owls and the clamor of a young boy named Max scraping his shovel against the surface of a rock during his treasure-seeking adventures. Puffin has acquired the debut picture book from author-illustrator Al Rodin after a hotly-contested seven-way auction. The final page unites the characters from earlier pages with a reassuring message for readers: “Just because the sun has set, / doesn’t mean it will not rise. Skillfully told, the book feels like a bedtime story composed in the moment, with just the right amount of description to seem spontaneous. Shy children ages four to eight who yearn to find their inner voices will be heartened by this book.

I'm immensely grateful to the Puffin team for their incredible support and encouragement and I can't wait to introduce everyone to Little Echo! Since then, I’ve often thought about that story and wondered when it would make its way into the world. A charming little story that will teach young readers about how to be brave and speak up, and how to help others around us, and perhaps most importantly that sometimes people around us are shy and scared but that doesn't mean they don't want to be friends!

As a follow-up, readers should be encouraged to make their own suggestions to complete the titular phrase.

Having spent many years working with children, she discovered a love of picture books and began writing her own. Still, their bonding makes for a cozier resolution than the tragic lack of one in the classic “Echo and Narcissus” myth. The bright yellow creature longs to join the cave’s other inhabitants as they frolic and play, but her terrible timidity keeps her silent and watchful. When Little Echo realizes that Max is in danger, she finds her courage, and even better, a true friend. We at Penguin Random House Australia acknowledge that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples are the Traditional Custodians and the first storytellers of the lands on which we live and work. From a stunning new author-illustrator comes a debut picture book celebrating friendship, courage and finding your own voice. Rodin’s message is quiet and gentle, but clear: It’s so much easier to find your voice when you have someone to listen.
